The new coronavirus has struck hardest in working-class neighborhoods in New York Citys outer boroughs, city data shows, underlining how the pandemic has ravaged densely packed lower-income areas where social-distancing guidelines have proved difficult to implement.
Two areas of QueensCorona and Elmhursthave led the city in reported infections, with 947 and 831 as of March 31, respectively, the data show. Both neighborhoods are heavily populated by immigrants who live in close quarters, often with multiple families sharing a dwelling, said City Councilman Francisco Moya.
Dr. Mitchell Katz, the chief executive and president of NYC Health + Hospitals, said it is difficult for some people to isolate and maintain social distancing to slow the spread of the virus, especially in the hardest-hit neighborhoods in Queens. You may have multiple families living together in a very small apartment, so its easy to understand why theres a lot of transmission of Covid occurring, he said Wednesday.
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on Wednesday released the raw numbers of people who were tested and those who were diagnosed with the infection, broken down by ZIP Code, after Mayor Bill de Blasio had resisted the move for more than a week.
By contrast, wealthier neighborhoods had fewer tests and positive cases. In the ZIP Code covering lower Manhattan near the World Trade Center, 24 people were tested and six were positive, data show. Battery Park Citys ZIP Code had 38 people tested and 16 positive cases.
And in Long Island City, Queens, which has more newly built, high-end apartments, 45 people were tested and 13 tested positive, according to the data.

Elmhurst demographics is almost all Asian and Hispanic (lots and lots and lots of illegals):
“The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 6.6% (5,870) White, 1.3% (1,140) African American, 0.2% (133) Native American, 43.8% (38,699) Asian, 0.0% (28) Pacific Islander, 0.4% (338) from other races, and 1.6% (1,423) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of a”ny race were 46.1% (40,796) of the population.”
Yes, low-paid illegals in our cities have been a public health tinder box, waiting for the match.
Holy shiznit! That line finally makes sense.
Thanks, Jim. Now I can die.
Not sure how contemporary this is as a political issue.
My grandma started her 55-year career in NYC Public schools in 1911. Until my mom was born, she taught on the Lower East Side.
Of course, it was a different world. Her mission, as she saw it, was creating Americans out of Jews, Italians, Greeks, Irish, etc - but the places her students lived were quite similar to the places described in this article.
By the way, she had 60 students in her classroom, no aides, no ESL, no sex positive programs. She used only English (although her family spoke German at home) and taught the 3Rs + patriotism.
When she died in 1985, there were some 70 year olds at her funeral to pay tribute to the teacher who gave them their wonderful lives in America.
Deserves reposting. I bet your grandmother has a seat in heaven by Jesus himself. What a legacy.
I’d love to be able to read the story in full, but it says I have to subscribe. Oh well...

I suspect the Italian neighborhoods contributed greatly.
