You have to belong to the M.A.B Club in order to name drugs

"... some sort of drug naming convention ..."

Yep.

I'll let you track down the scheme. One I'm familiar with is "imatinib". I believe that the "ib" suffix indicates a drug which "inhibits". In the case of imatinib it inhibits, I believe, cell division triggered by "stem cell factor".

Similar drugs are sunitinib and dasatinib. For over four years I wondered how I could tolerate imatinib without a substantial negative effect on my normal cells. I was taken off the drug when routine testing revealed that, in fact, I was suffering side-effects that took some time to be detected. Hopefully by then the drug had done its job.

The really deadly wave of the Spanish Flu didn’t happen until late in 1918. If he hasn’t had his birthday yet this year, it could be correct that he was alive for that. He may have been born between the first and second wave of it.

Will they forego the clinical trials? People are dying- They need drugs NOW-

...

Can’t doctors prescribe it off label if necessary?

If you haven't seen this 15+ minute video of Rudy Guiliani interviewing a NYC doctor I think you will be interested. I found it on Bill Whittle's channel so go to the 3:20 mark to see the interview only. The interview ends at about the 19:00 minute mark.

The CoronaSphere Lounge Episode 11: EUREKA! (I Have Found It!)

He has treated 500-600 patients, hasn't lost one, hasn't put one on a ventilator and uses $20 dollars worth of pills.

“Tolicizumab is so effective that the FDA gives green lights to Phase III Tocilizumab Trial for COVID-19 pneumonia. “

There doesn’t seem to have been enough time to be in a Phase III trial. The disease hasn’t been known long enough.

The Dr pushing this drug, Giuseppe Galati, completely dismisses HCQ/ZPAK

despite the large noise on social media. Here in Italy they are trying several combinations of antiviral included the combination HCQ + azithro. Infectivologist refer little benefit.

Our infectivologists & ICU are not referring up to now a significant improvement. We have good case reports about #tolicizumab 👍

There are trials underway for both drugs.

Don’t know the details. Maybe hydroxychloroquine + azithromycin is fine before the symptoms get too bad, and Tocilizumab works better on critically ill patients.

Lots still to be learned.

The suffix “mumab”...is a shortened version of MUrine Monoclonal AntiBody”....not an official nomenclature.IIRC..but most murine (mouse) derived antibodies use that naming convention. As far as the beginning part...the joke was so that docs would have a hard time saying it...and use the trade name...hence free advertising. Usually it is a combination of drugs use and discovery beginnings.Prime example..the antibiotic “bacitracin”...named after girl named Trecy...in which a bacterium subtilis of which she was infected with was studied...tbe b. Subtilis produced a compound which would kill other bacteria. Compound named “bacitracin”.
But many times there is no discernible reason for choice
