Nola Mayor, Fight Virus Not President

The United States has now become the world leader in a rather unfortunate category with the largest number of coronavirus victims. This is due to the vast expansion of tests that have been made available in the United States. In contrast, the reports out of China cannot be trusted.

As of Saturday, March 28, there were 121,117 confirmed cases and 2,010 deaths associated with the coronavirus in the United States. The area with the fifth-highest total of deaths in the country is New Orleans, which leads the nation in fatalities per capita.

Questions are being raised about why New Orleans is ranked so high on the list. Of course, some analysts are pointing to Mardi Gras as the culprit. There were over 1.2 million local citizens and visitors crammed onto the streets of New Orleans for the multi-day celebration in late February, so the coronavirus connection seems clear.

While Mardi Gras is probably one of many reasons why New Orleans has been hit so hard by the coronavirus, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, a progressive Democrat, is not accepting any of the blame. In media interviews, Cantrell has focused her ire at the federal government, practically blaming President Donald Trump personally for the problem.

In an interview on Thursday with Wolf Blitzer for CNN’s show “The Situation Room,” Cantrell said, “When it's not taken seriously at the federal level, it's very difficult to transcend down to the local level in making these decisions.” She said she was not given “clear direction” and there were “no red flags” about holding Mardi Gras. According to Cantrell, “if we were given proper direction, we would not have had Mardi Gras and I would have been the leader to cancel it.”

This is an expedient and selective analysis by Cantrell. She did not mention that the president stopped all air travel from China four weeks before Mardi Gras. Two weeks before the event, Dr. Nancy Messonnier of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Americans “should be prepared for this new virus to gain a foothold in the United States.”

In February, no one knew exactly how prevalent the coronavirus would become, certainly not the president of the United States nor any other politician. As the outbreak has worsened in New Orleans, Mayor Cantrell is looking for a convenient scapegoat. This is the same approach being used by Washington Governor Jay Inslee, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and other liberal leaders across the country. For Democratic Mayors and Governors, President Trump is an easy target.

A better approach would be to acknowledge what the president has done to deal with the crisis. In the case of New Orleans, the president was not unresponsive to the needs of the region or the state. He approved a federal disaster declaration for Louisiana, making the state the fifth in the nation to qualify for additional federal funding. This also will allow for the full reimbursement of state and local expenses, which currently total at least $71 million to fight the spread of the disease. The federal government is also providing financial support for three coronavirus testing sites in the New Orleans area and has provided almost $40 million in financial resources through the Stafford Act and the CDC.

Along with the Mardi Gras celebration, other factors certainly have played a role in New Orleans being at the top of the coronavirus list. The city has thousands of homeless people and a large percentage of its citizens with inadequate healthcare and housing. In New Orleans, there is a high poverty rate and a huge number of people have preexisting conditions that make the coronavirus even more severe.

It would be easy to criticize Mayor Cantrell for not effectively addressing the underlying economic, healthcare, housing and other problems that contributed to the spread of the disease in New Orleans. However, instead of blaming any political leader at this point, a better course of action is for the politicians to start working together and supporting President Trump as his coronavirus task force deals with this emergency.

Launching political attacks on President Trump on a liberal cable television network may help Mayor Cantrell with her base of loyal Democratic voters in New Orleans, but it will not help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The only way to lessen the spread and mitigate the damage from the virus is for there to be cooperation among citizens, businesses, government agencies and vigorous support from the federal government.

Mayor Cantrell should realize that insulting President Trump on national television is not the best way to foster close cooperation from the federal government. It is time for her to end the nasty political blame game and start working with President Trump to deal with this disease. Scoring cheap political points is always distasteful, but it is especially offensive when lives are in danger.

“The United States has now become the world leader in a rather unfortunate category with the largest number of coronavirus victims.”

Well.. the largest number of REPORTED Coronavirus victims. Does anyone truly think China’s being straightforward with its reporting?

I highly doubt China is being straightforward but on the other hand we have a fake news media as well and God knows what the real story is here as well. They may be counting cancer patients, or ANY cause of deah as Coronavirus deaths or just making up phantom victims to make it worse than what it seems solely to harm Trump.

For example why do all the blue states have the highest infected? The sanctuary state of NY that recently gave drivers licenses to illegals, home state of AOC, Schumer, Nadler, Hillary, DeBlasio, Cuomo, the worst kind of leftist asswads going, why are they claiming 10 times the amount of victims of California when California has 5 times the population size? These numbers seem completely out of whack.

So, NOLA finally cancelled its annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, so what did the revelers do? They went to Irish Channel bars, particularly “Tracy’s,” and held a huge block party. So, Da Mayor should shut up, put on her big girl pants, and take some responsibility.

She sent police to shut that party down. The only reason people are blaming Mardi Gras is that it’s the only thing they know about New Orleans. Jefferson Parish had Mardi Gras too. Its death rate is half of Orleans. Poor public health in general is the number one factor here. Number two is the cluster at Lambeth House (senior community full of rich white people), that has claimed so many lives.

We are originally from New Orleans.

Metairie and the West Bank have parades, yes; but they are nowhere near as crowded or congested as the city’s; and there is nowhere “in the Parishes” that comes even remotely close to the crowds in the Quarter.

Latoya is trying to slough blame. She asked for this job, so DO IT. NOLA has 70 deaths, only bout 12 are from Lambeth. Jefferson (that also had Mardi Gras) is second in the state with 26.

Little miss La Toya has blood on her hands. She didn’t shut down Mardi Gras.

The mayor's tweet about cancelled public events is copied in the linked article. Note the date, compared with the pre-Mardi Gras CDC warning cited in the article above.

In other words, "it's the President's fault we acted stupid."

Can't make this stuff up.
