BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungary has banned the commercial export of hydroxychloroquine sulfate, an ingredient used in drugs for coronavirus treatment in several countries, the government said on Wednesday. The ban applies to hydroxychloroquine sulfate and drugs containing the ingredient. “As Hungary is one of the world’s largest exporters of this ingredient, the protection and medical supply of the Hungarian population is now a priority,” the government said in a statement on its website.

Hungary should just mass produce the stuff and see if they can help corner the global market. It’s in their LONG-TERM self-interest to produce that stuff and sell it to the world, while still keeping an appropriate amount for themselves.

That seems a bit - shall we say, selfish - on the part of the Hungarian government. But it is nice to see a country where they firmly put their own citizens first.

Terrible that the US has to rely on other countries for so much

If I’m not mistaken, Reuters reported yesterday that trump “falsely claimed” that the drug worked. I guess TDS immobilizes your desire to be logically consistent..

But I was told by the authoritative news media that this isn’t a real cure?

Yup, they did indeed, they also tried to blame Trump for mentioning that this was a possible treatment for the disease after someone took it evidently without doctor’s permission (don’t know how he got it since I believe it is a prescription drug).

There is no word to describe what I feel when I look at, hear, or read anything written by the media vermin.

I’ll not expose my wishes, but I know that they are held by many.

Very many.

Hungary must have a good reason for this. Without other info, I support Hungary all the way!

I believe it is a relatively simple chemical that can easily be produced in any advanced country. Medical-grade has special sanitary and purity requirements, but many drug companies could make it.

“As Hungary is one of the world’s largest exporters of this ingredient”

That may change when this is all over.

I get a little defensive about Hungary. I am American with no Hungarian blood, but I support them.

They are defending themselves against an oppressive EU.

Them and Poland.

I support Hungary keeping what they produce. Maybe they will produce enough to sell to other countries eventually.

They would have been better off having the government just say “Hungarian producers must fill orders from Hungarian customers before non-Hungarian customers”, and then let their producers ramp up production.

Now there is no incentive to increase production.

We do make the drug in the USA. Note that Hungary is “one of” the largest suppliers. The USA, France, India, Finland, China, Taiwan and others make it too. This might be a move by Hungary to stop a few large countries, like CHINA, from buying everything they can. We too, should be careful with our free markets right now, placing America first, followed by friends and allies.

Agreed. Same here. Eastern Europe areas are unique and have lived under the authoritarian government.
