Journalism Needs a Stimulus
Columbia Journalism Review ^ | March 24, 2020 | Craig Aaron

Posted on 03/24/2020 1:58:49 PM PDT by PittsburghAfterDark

THE CORONAVIRUS COVID-19 HAS UPENDED everything, including business as usual in Washington. In a matter of days, facing the reality of a nationwide shutdown and a worsening economic crisis, Congress got serious about spending money—a lot of it.

A recovery package in the trillions of dollars is expected soon, and more stimulus bills are likely to follow. While the most powerful lobbies in Washington—the airlines, the oil companies, the chambers of commerce—are ready with their wish lists, the media and policymakers aren’t talking enough about how recovery and stimulus bills could help journalism.

Free Press, the independent, nonprofit advocacy organization I lead, champions structural solutions to the news business’s dire financial problems. We’ve long campaigned for more federal and state support for public media, opposed media consolidation, and argued that journalism is too important to democracy to be left to the whims of the market.

Nothing says holding government to account like being funded by the government.

My suggestion, get a real job. You probably are not well read anyway. So no great loss.

Or voluntary decimation as penance for their poor performance. They are supposed to be professionals after all.

“Stimulus” is a funny way to say “kick in the @ss”.

“Journalism Needs a Stimulus”

OK, but the Enemedia deserves a fate worse than death.

“more federal and state support for public media”

There is plenty of media the collective American “public” owns. It’s in the American people’s privately held for profit and non-profit “media” outfits of every variety. That is exactly as the founders intended.

I’ve a better idea: impose a $500 a month fee on journalists.

Not lawful under the Constitution? Well, neither is Social Security but that didn’t stop F-ingDR...

With so many examples of sheer idiocy it takes a lot to make me notice but this has to rank in the top few percent of ignorance. Local news drying up? The importance of getting local COVID news? ‘Journalists’ are the dumbest of the dumb. I have never known any story in which details known by me personally are accurately represented, let alone if NUMBERS or scientific facts are involved.

President Trump will appoint VP Pence as Truth Czar. All news reports and editorials must be approved by him. The NY Times motto will be changed to “he who pays the piper calls the tune” to forever remind them that they sold themselves out.

Not only should the government provide the Journalism Industry some stimulus, they should provide encouragement, to learn to code, just like Uncle Joe said.

What most journalists need is an IV infusion of honesty and integrity.
