The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Steyn Online ^ | 21 Mar 2020 | Kathy Shaidle

The death of industrial music pioneer and perpetual provocateur Genesis P-Orridge got me thinking.

Not that I liked his "music." (I decline to use his preferred pronoun, "s/he.")

But because P-Orridge died at age 70, I enjoyed picturing bummed out young "trans" poseurs learning through these obituaries that body modification and "gender fluidity" weren't their ideas.

I also thought — not for the first time since the advent of what Steve Sailer calls "World War T" — about The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975.)

The enduring cult film started out as a campy London stage musical that spoofed science fiction B-movies while dialing up the tropes of then-trendy glam rock.

"Space age" androgyny, often awkwardly slapped on top of incongruously macho, stomping tunes. (Think: Gary Glitter, Slade, Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie, Alice Cooper).

The plot is simple: Stranded clean-cut newlyweds seek shelter at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), "a sweet transvestite" from the planet Transylvania. He and his minions suck the couple into their hedonistic lifestyle, but the party can't last forever...

“ I’ve only seen it about 45 times. I’m still a newbie.“

Same here. Saturday nights at the Art Cinema in New Brunswick.

Lighters, newspaper, water guns.

Been there, done that, 77 times.

“WTF am I watching?!” I remember the midnight RHPS but for the real WTF am I watching, I’ve seen the Plasmatics live.

So this dead thing reminds the author of RHPS, and so the article is about RHPS.

Love it! Know it by heart. Did it many times.

Bizarre premise for an article.

“George C. Scott passed away this week, so here’s an article about my impressions of Donald Rumsfeld...”

“Lips! Lips! Lips! Lips!”

You got that wrong!

It's "Lick it! Lick it! Lick it!"

Regards,

The first time I saw it, I had the same reaction as everyone else: "WTF am I watching?!"

Thought it was pure crap, but then got into it. I ended up with a lot of respect for Tim Curry for taking that part.

Later on, he attended one of the midnight shows where everyone dressed up, turned to the camera and said, "I'm glad to see there are people more depraved than I am." I got the feeling he was taken aback by the whole thing.

One other kick I got was seeing Charles Gray who, up to that point, always played "the coldly pompous military heavies or the perpetually sneering, overbearing upper-class twits" (IMDB), as the Criminologist cavorting on top of the desk.

My parents didn’t let me do whatever the heck I wanted to do, although I did see the movie once in Highland Park.....

So why are we surprised to see Bruised Gender do his stuff 40 years later???

True story:

My mom was called for jury duty in Dallas and it was a case involving the guy (big name big time realtor ... I forget his name) who owned the HP theater. She said she opposed TRHPS screenings..... they told her not to return for jury after that.

Way to go, Mom!!!

I saw it years ago at the Biograph Theatre in Chicago, where Dillenger was killed. Kind of a two for one!

It's just a hop to the left.

She probably was a leftist nutcase in 1975, too. Just nobody noticed because she was an unknown actress at the time.

That’s a possibility.

On the other hand, she may have been normal until she spent time in the toxic environment of Hollywood. Stockholm syndrome.

Not the times I've gone to see the film. It's always been “Lips!..." etc.

Must be regional differences in play. Boston area is the only place I've seen it in a theater.

“Mommy Dearest”.

That's the only one I can think of, too. And I agree with your comment.
