Dr. Antony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, urged Americans to shut down more aggressively as the coronavirus spreads.
On MSNBCs Meet the Press Mr. Fauci endorsed a 14-day national shutdown to help slow down the virus. He explained that he has brought it up with the administration, which is generally open to his ideas.
I think Americans should be prepared that they are going to have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing, he said.
On ABCs This Week the doctor explained that lockdowns helped China and South Korea fight the rapid spread of the disease in their countries. China, he said, has reached its peak and is starting to see number of cases drop, whereas South Korea has flatlined.
However, he warned that while its hard to predict exactly how long the virus will be a threat, the U.S. should prepare for this to last for several weeks or a few months.
What we should be doing is absolutely much much different. Not business as usual. Just chill down, he said on ABC.
Across the nation, public schools and events are being shut down as states and local officials try to contain the virus.

But the supply lines need to continue to move or things will get really bad.
Will the shutdown include the media?
He’s right.
I think the good Dr Fauci is not factoring in the possibility that the cure that he has in mind is worse than the disease. You need to strike a balance.
Does he want everyone to starve? That’s the situation except for the few who have put in months of food supplies.
This is nuts. Of course it is serious. But shutting everything down for several months will definitely send this country into a depression, not a recession, and will likely bring on societal unrest unlike anything we have seen as a nation. This isn’t the 1930’s. People will not stand quietly in soup lines.
Fire away.
A common occurrence in highly educated people......Vast knowledge in their expertise, often deficient in basic common sense.
From the looks of things at a number of Walmart, Meijers, and Walgreens stores I visited this last week I would say...........REAL bad.
Even the tylenol and ibuprofin was cleaned out.
I posted Newt a few minutes ago calling for more action like this. I suspect we will be there shortly, the sooner we do so the quicker we begin slowing down the spread. Shame on the CDC for not being better prepared, more responsive, and shame on them for trying to centralize everything.
“China, he said, has reached its peak and is starting to see number of cases drop, whereas South Korea has flatlined.”
BS. The 2 most closed commie societies/gov’ts in the world lie thru their teeth, daily. Anyone who trusts what they say, is an idiot, or worse. Fauci is just that. Million are infected and hundreds-of-thousands dead, but the 40 large, portable crematoria have “reduced” the cases, in Hunan China.
ROFL!!! We could only hope!!!!!!
I can see the younger crowd, 35 and under. Nothing to do. Due to abortion mindset, they don’t care about life. They don’t care much about the older folk or whether they carry the virus to those at risk.
They will party and go out without concern. It’s spring break, they earned it. No cruise ships to board, no sport events to attend, they will look elsewhere and NOT STAY isolated.
I’ll betcha bars were hopping last night all across this country, and ever more crowded than previous times.
That sector is our biggest concern and unfortunately govt is likely to step in and ban freedom for everyone and not just this select troubled group.
South Korea is Communist?
News to me.
There is a balance. Trump needs to show real leadership here—guide in taking actions like stopping unnecessary travel, large events, preparing your families for disruption (extra food, etc. — wonder what percent of Americans have more than a week of food and stuff on hand? A month?). Trump needs to focus effort on getting government to act. Centralized CDC testing was a total failure.
CHINA, as a country, did NOT SHUT DOWN.
They shut down Wuhan and some surrounding areas - not the entire country.
South Korea is testing everyone and anyone who gets it is immediately quarantined.
And, again, this will only stop THIS outbreak. If you don’t SHUT DOWN THE WORLD - the virus will continue to spread and find its way back into the country, retriggering the outbreak from those who are immune.
And what are we going to do then? Shut the country down AGAIN?
This isn’t sustainable for our country or for civilization.
Government Speak. Shut everything down. Screw it all up.
Again, many more are dying right now from seasonal flu than from COVID-19.
What I don’t get is how a two-, four-, or even eight-week “shut down” helps. The virus hasn’t spread enough to create any “herd immunity” yet. So people go into isolation, then emerge after a few weeks. What is it that prevents the virus from picking up its exponential growth trajectory where it left off? There will always be some lingering cases here and there, people who just couldn’t go into “shut down” mode, people coming in from out of the country.
I just don’t see the benefit of such a shut-down from an epidemiological perspective. Wouldn’t it just be better to let it run its course now and get it over with? Or is this just an attempt to “flatten the curve” and it will run its natural course anyway?
not for long - Democrat states are shutting down bars and liquor stores.
First of all, get chuckie shoomer, nancy pelosi, and AOC to shut their stupid yaps!
It is essential to do this ASAP. As Yogi Berra said, “It’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future”, but under these circumstances, this one is easy.
