There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.
The mathematics of statistics is only as good as the data collection. If there is incomplete data, either by not knowing what to look for, or deliberate exclusion, the computations are skewed and do not reflect reality.
Science, if practiced as it was intended to be, is NEVER settled. The collation of data is a primary tool in the building of scientific principles. Intellectual honesty is an absolute requisite. And even then, factors poorly understood get overlooked.
What numbers? Deaths? Or deaths per day? The total number will always get bigger, but the number of new deaths per day is trending down.
To put it into perspective, hospitals in Wuhan were overwhelmed with critically ill COVID-19 patients (that’s probably still the case) and it appears that is now happening in Italy.

A more meaningful number would be what percentage of those who have the flu and die actually have pneumonia.

I wonder if Italy has a lot of tourism during the winter months - something I don’t expect to be the case in Germany.
I am personally more frightened by the mathematical ignorance in this country than by the germs.
Now they are saying the death rate is closer to 1% (mostly infirm elderly) once we dilute the number with more tests.
