Former United Auto Workers (UAW) president Gary Jones was charged Thursday by federal prosecutors with embezzling more than $1 million of UAW funds for personal use.
The Detroit News reported Thursday that Jones was charged in a criminal information, indicating that he could plead guilty to the charges in the weeks ahead. Several of his former aides have already admitted to stealing UAW funds for travel and other personal expenses.
He faces two counts, one involving conspiracy to embezzle union funds and another for using an interstate commerce facility to engage in racketeering. Both of the charges have maximum prison sentences of five years behind bars.
The Detroit News reported Thursday that Jones is expected to cooperate with investigators as part of a deal reached with prosecutors into investigations into a number of current and former top union figures including the UAW's current president, Rory Gamble.
The investigation has so far touched numerous top UAW executives and reportedly pushed the autoworkers union to the brink of a federal takeover due to widespread corruption concerns. The union was accused last year of having been involved in a scheme in which automaker Fiat Chrysler allegedly bribed top UAW executives to allow newer workers to be paid at a lower rate, thereby cutting costs. Fiat Chrysler has denied the allegations.
Jones resigned from the union in November as union members were moving to expel him over the embezzling controversy.

I’m surprised it was only about a million. I would have expected far more.
Not the least bit surprised to hear “news” like this.
No way so many are involved for only a million.
I’m guessing a million is the tip of the iceberg and there were other scams going on
Do crooks get hired as union bosses, or does becoming a union boss cause one to become a crook?
Nowwe you know why unions were really formed.
Leeches on the company.
Leeches on the workers.
Leeches on the customers.
Unions are a form of racketeering. Why should it be surprising when their bosses are found with their hands in the cookie jar?
Only a million??
Chump Change
A million just isn’t what it used to be if he spent it on his personal lifestyle and none of the members noticed.
Only a million? What a piker.
“”embezzling more than $1 million of UAW funds for personal use.””
Is there any other reason to do such a thing?
