Starbucks to temporarily ban personal cups over coronavirus fears

Starbucks announced Wednesday that it will impose a temporary moratorium on the use of reusable personal mugs in its stores amid fears over the coronavirus outbreak.

The change is part of “a series of precautionary steps in response to this emerging public health impact,” Rossann Williams, executive vice president and president, U.S. company-operated business and Canada, said in an open letter Wednesday.

"Our focus remains on two key priorities: Caring for the health and well-being of our partners and customers and playing a constructive role in supporting local health officials and government leaders as they work to contain the virus," Williams added.

Williams also outlined other steps the company has taken, including increased cleaning and restricting business-related air travel globally and domestically through the end of March.

She added that the company will continue to honor its 10-cent discount for people bringing their own personal cups.

Naturally single use is going to be more sanitary than re-use.

Maybe we should bring back plastic straws and plastic bags to cut down on the transmission of diseases.

I would be more concerned with the granola hippies they employ.

Hold it... We only have 11 years left... What are we going to do when it warms up be a half a degree in temperature?

I’ll guarentee, just like influenza A & B, the number of new cases of COVID-19 will begin tapering off in the next 5-6 weeks!

Let’s also not forget, most people are recovering from Coronavirus!

Sorry, I have not been inside a Starbucks in almost a decade - what is a personal reusable mug? Is that something customers bring with them to the store? I did not know this was allowed.

Hey, how about they “temporarily” make it illegal to pee and poo outside the front door of Starbucks?

Long overdue. People bringing their personal nasty coffee cups up for refill is terrible.

I generally Boycott them, but about a year ago I simply had to have some coffee and went into a SBUX. Well, the air of barista supremacy was so thick that I thought I’d suffocate in there. Amazing how puffy a person can become because they think they have some amazing job....serving coffee....at Starbucks. I try to only buy from small independent coffee stands when I need a coffee on the road.

I rarely go to fast food joints any more as a matter of personal choice regarding calories...

I hit BK last week and was I shocked to see what was being passed off as a “straw”. I remember plastic coffee stirrers with more volume.
