Imagining what a President Bernie Sanders would mean for Jews
New York Post ^ | March 1, 2020 | Karol Markowicz

WASHINGTON, NOV. 20, 2021: When Bernie Sanders won the presidential election in a squeaker last year, progressive Jews enthused that a glorious new era in American Judaism had dawned.

Synagogues in Park Slope and on the Upper West Side took turns hosting thought leaders such as Peter Beinart (author of “The Crisis of Zionism”) and Max Blumenthal (“Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel”) to explain how American Jews were heading into a “post-Israel” era — and why that was a good thing.

Lefty rabbis published lengthy Facebook posts about how mainstream and center-right Jewish organizations are all actually racist — and how the Sanders administration will help Jews overcome the community’s “particularist obsession” with “Jewish security.”

Yet a year into his term, the first Jewish president hasn’t, in fact, ushered in a Jewish golden age. For one thing, violent attacks against Jews, particularly the Orthodox, continue to escalate, triggering an exodus not seen since that of French Jewry in 2015-16.

The $17 federal minimum wage has sharply increased the unemployment rate among unskilled workers, and Jews have been an immediate scapegoat on the far right and left. Harsh new housing-development standards enacted as part of the Green New Deal, meanwhile, have deepened the existing homelessness crisis.

“Jewish landlords” has emerged as a catchphrase seen on many signs at “Free Homes Now” protests. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Linda Sarsour has voiced her support for the movement on Twitter. Confronted with evidence of overt anti-Semitism, she said Team Sanders “deplores all hate,” while urging “privileged communities” to “think and act intersectionally.”

When three synagogues were burned to the ground in Los Angeles, White House Press Secretary Bill de Blasio said: “Let me be very clear. We won’t stand for these white-supremacist attacks on any community.”

We should not hope that Sanders get the nomination. There is a real chance he could beat Trump, since he has a loyal and energized base that is donating heavily to his campaign. This column imagines who would be in his cabinet and what some of the consequences of his victory would be.

Outside of conservatives, it’s hard to explain to the brain-dead why giveaways aren’t free and are very dangerous.

However, the Trump base is very energized and Trump has $92 million cash on hand compared to $16 million for Sanders

Sanders is pathetic. A mentally ill old guy. But Bloomberg alienated almost as many people with his arrogance. And he’s losing votes actually having his damned ads ( full of distortions and lies!) interrupt broadcast concerts - not even waiting for the normal commercial break.

But would there be railcars full of deplorables heading to the camps? Would a Jewish guy try to exterminate Patriots?

Consequences of a lazy, old, sick man in the White House? It will not take his bots long to figure out he is a con-artist ... promising freebies, that are not his to give or take... It is a national disgrace upon the memories of the bloodshed given from this nation against the slavery of communism and socialism.

I tell my husband daily to not assume it’s a snap that Pres Trump will win re-election.

Not only are there millions of former/present students who would vote for him to rid themselves of their debt, their parents who were foolish enough to sign off on student loans would most likely short of sell their souls to rid themselves of that debt.

I don’t hear ANYONE talking about them. I sure wish someone would bring that up in the general politics.

Sigh.

Bernie beat Trump? Not a chance.

But those stupids would vote for ANY Dem nominee, so what's the difference?

Trump voters are chaffing at the bit to vote for Trump in November and some "usual/reliable" Dem voters won't vote for Bernie no matter what!

And as far as a "contested Convention" is concerned, no, Michelle Obama will NEVER run, Hillary is a no go too, Oprah won't do it either...so all of those silly prognostications are not only moot, but patently ridiculous!

Charlie Kirk was just on Levin saying this same thing - we cannot afford complacency.

I don’t know if it’s true or not but I keep hearing that Bernie is an atheist. He’s definitely not pro-Israel FWIW.

It’s all about the Trumpsters being so sure of Pres Trump’s re-election that they get LAZY and don’t vote, assuming the other Trumpsters surely will be voting.

It’d be like Virginia, only en masse.

I’m sure Virginians never thought they’d lose to the Dems.

I don’t think that complacency will be an issue; we all know how awful things would be,IF Trump loses. And he WILL stir voters to rousing, the closer November is...he does it now, for crying out loud!

No need to get emotional, nopardons.

As those folks in Virginia if they thought they were complacent prior to the election.

It’s not about Pres Trump telling us to be sure to go vote.

It’s about the possible laziness of Republican voters and the drive of Democrat voters to erase their debt in any and all ways possible.

We better pray the Dems get him stopped even before the convention. He's very bad for the country pushing out his communist lingo which too few today can even recognize He reminds me of slippery tongued Lenin....who gathered all the peasants together and promised them a free ride, then slaughtered thousands who opposed him after.
