HUD Secretary declares, 'In God We Trust'
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson plans to call on all churches, synagogues, and mosques in America to help fight homelessness in the weeks and months to come.
“If every church would adopt one homeless person or one homeless family, with the goal of making them self-sufficient in a year, can you imagine what the impact would be?” Carson asked in an interview with Just the News for the Pod's Honest Truth podcast.
HUD officials say this is not a new agency policy but rather a personal call by a man who is not only a cabinet secretary but also a devout Christian who wants to promote godly principles such as caring for your neighbor.
“Our money says, ‘In God We Trust,’” Carson noted. “Why don't we act like that?”
The call for places of worship to get involved is playing out in cities like Riverside, California. Carson recently visited a group of homes there situated on the grounds of the Grove Community Church, where the homeless stay and receive rehabilitation services.
The program is a public-private partnership between local city officials, who foot the bill, and the church, which provides services. That fits Carson’s philosophy of less government and more community involvement.
“They have all the resources and the skills of the people in the church,” Carson said. “They help them, they develop relationships, they get them jobs, they get them moving.”
As a government official, Secretary Carson’s call for places of worship to help the homeless will no doubt raise eyebrows among those concerned about separation of church and state. But Carson believes current notions of church-state separation have grown more expansive than intended by the framers.

In the old days when we had an immigration system...churchs would do this...
Sponsor a family or a couple of people...and get them a job and a place to stay and
other immigrants to help them along because they new the language...
Yes our church did that with a family who got out of Hungary in the early 80s.
How many ‘homeless’ came here from other countries?
How many ‘homeless’ were assisted in their journey to America by US charities, the Mexican government, and others? Why didn’t any of these groups offer them assistance to their homeless problem instead of ‘travel problems’?
How many US homeless find themselves homeless in a strange city because sone Democrat mayor bussed them out of their city?
The pressure needs to be against the states to re-open mental institutions!
Christian church services were held in the chambers of both the Senate and the Supreme Court. And as President, Thomas Jefferson had a reserved seat and was noted to never miss a service. Oh, and the early Congress appropriated funds from the treasury to hire ministers and purchase Bibles, for the purpose of evangelizing the Indian tribes.
That’s pretty much all you need to know to see how the modern version of “separation of church and state” is a complete lie.
Help others to help themselves; but only if they want to be helped. There are a lot that don’t want you to.
For those who are able to be helped, it sounds intriguing.
For hard core drug addict or schizophrenic people, chuch compassion will not help.
Aren’t religious organizations such as the Salvation army doing this job now? Maybe time and effort would he better spent donating to such organizations, even including providing federal funds to groups with a proven track record of having success in dealing with life’s toughest problems?

If local churches are going to help house the homeless for any extended period of time, they are going to need reliable funding. Maybe Dr. Carson has such a plan.

That’s great, but the churches also have to be allowed to preach to these people or do outreach to them to tell them how to find a reason for living.
The reason the Salvation Army and other effective Christian organizations get no funds is that the government would not allow them to give religious messages to their “clients,” even though that is exactly what the clients need. Is Ben Carson changing this?
In any case, most sincere religious organizations probably wouldn’t accept any Government money anyway, since he who pays the piper calls the tune.
This is an easy problem to fix. Withhold $10,000 per person per week for every homeless person that is still on the streets. Only thay cannot be bused out. Any homeless people bused out and its $100 grand per person. Only way to stop this crap is withholding money. Courts be damned!

Almost zero. You cannot help those who want no help.
This is good, but we need to deal with individuals, not a group or class. Homeless people are not a statistic. Too easy to oversimply and look at “them” as a problem to be solved. Has it ever occurred to anyone that some people may serve society well and livve a full life without a home? Yes. Jesus did during His earthly ministry. One thing NOT to do is look down on the homeless.

Nope. When the government creates them through retarded policies like legalized dope, destroying families, welfare money flowing, open borders, free flowing oxycontin, opening up the insane asylums, globalism, etc. ... churches have no obligation to take up the slack.
I know he means well, but the imbeciles in DC create the homeless, and then dare to ask churches to fix it. Better the churches get involved in prepping and retaking morals in America.
Most cities and towns do have missions and shelters doing this work, and those who truly want help will go to them and abide by their rules and policies. Churches and individuals can donate to or volunteer at their local shelters.
I live in SW Florida....looks like the police pick up the homeless and there taken to a mental health clinic...can only keep them ten days...
If they agree they go to the Salvation Army for drug treatment...getting them taking there drugs for what ever....
Then the Salvation Army gets them a job....if all goes well they go to Catholic Charities for housing....
If they go back on the street it starts over...
Some probably move on to some other place....
