Post-impeachment, House Democrats sharpen focus on Barr

WASHINGTON -- House Democrats frustrated over the Senate’s acquittal of President Donald Trump are pushing their oversight efforts toward the Justice Department and what they call Attorney General William Barr’s efforts to politicize federal law enforcement.

Democrats have demanded more information about Barr’s intervention in the case of Roger Stone, a longtime confidant of President Donald Trump who was convicted in November. Barr this week overruled prosecutors who had recommended that Stone be sentenced to 7 to 9 years in prison.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized Barr on Thursday, calling him one of Trump’s “henchmen.”

“The attorney general has stooped to such levels,” Pelosi said. “What a sad disappointment. The American people deserve better.”

The sharpened look at Barr’s activities comes at a time when many Democrats appear wary of prolonging the Ukraine inquiry that led to Trump’s impeachment.

First up will be examining whether Barr inappropriately intervened in the Stone case. Stone was convicted of lying to Congress, witness tampering and obstructing the House investigation into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to tip the 2016 election.

The turmoil within the Justice Department has given Democrats a new way forward for their investigations after the sting of the Senate’s impeachment acquittal. While there is little interest in pursuing another impeachment case, Democrats want to leverage the power of their majority to conduct oversight as they try to defeat Trump at the polls in November.

“The resignation and defection of these prosecutors is a huge alarm bell going off in our system,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, one of the most vocal Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee who pushed for impeachment. “So, that is the immediate emergency.”

That’s actually the most serious charge of them all. Since that friend was being questioned by the FBI in the case against Stone, it was absolutely ‘effing idiotic for Stone to do that. See my previous comment about all these morons being borderline retarded.

LOL... once again the democrats are going to open a can of whoopass upon themselves. They are really going to push the “weaponizing/politicizing the Justice Dept” narrative...really? Im sure Barr is licking his chops.

Nevertheless the Atty. Gen. is correct, the president made an unforced error with this tweet. Just as the president made an unforced error with the phone call leading to his impeachment. In each instance he was innocent and constitutionally authorized but ill advised. The Atty. Gen.'s job has been made more difficult, the Democrats were given the appearance of improper action, the administration was placed on the defensive.

I disagree. The President has an obligation to confront, head on, the existence of a two tiered Justice System. The fact that Michael Flynn is being racked over the coal while Clapper and Brennan are left unscathed; no one seams to care about the felony leaks coming from the NSC; Hillary's emails etc. The Judge and the jury in this case are riddled with political bias. Having half the country loose confidence in the fairness of the Justice System is an existential problem he needs to solve. Making it known, making it known that he knows is a required step.

Add coronavirus and we have a wonderful crisis that the Democrats are not likely to let go to waste.

Excellent point, as usual from you.

Believe me — the very last thing any of these prosecutors ever want to deal with is a defendant who thinks he has nothing left to lose.

True.

So they go after people with things to lose: their wealth, their family, their reputation.

Scum like Weissmann (a long time DOJ Democrat Deep Stater) was not getting the progress he wanted in the Enron case.

There were executives who did nothing wrong, and Weissmann knew it. He had the media on his side 24/7, smearing them all as a bunch of rich, white Republicans.

So Weissmann went after their wives, and children.

It's a very effective strategy.

He did the same thing with innocent executives at Merrill Lynch (and threw 2 of them into solitary confinement), who were later exonerated.

It did not help that Trump backed off from prosecuting Hillary the minute he won the election. We have waited quite a while for indictments of McCabe and his henchmen. Until these foot soldiers are brought to justice, they will not roll over on their superiors.

I agree. The folks around here and in the Trump camp who justify the inaction put it this way: "We have to make sure that every legal "I" and "T" are dotted and crossed, that's why it's taking so long."

That's a fool's errand.

The do-nothings in DOJ and elsewhere attempt to throw us all off the trail by claiming that Legal Nirvana must be reached before we can do anything about this clear case of treason and criminality.

Meanwhile, Hannity and others go on television and repeat the same old facts of the coup that we already learned about three years ago: "Bought and paid for dirty dossier!

It seems we have waited quite a while without any prosecutorial movement on obvious crimes of lying by numerous deep state operatives, starting with Hillary Clinton.

Barr won't go after Hillary or Obama, and no one will flip against them. They'll end up dead in prison, or their families will end up dead.

That much is 100% clear.

And Barr thinks that Trump’s tweets interfere with his work?

All part of a dance.

The President has an obligation to confront, head on, the existence of a two tiered Justice System.

I think you're 100% wrong here. If the President has an obligation to confront the two-tiered justice system "head on," then he should have issued -- LONG AGO -- pardons for anyone who is a victim of the system.

There are plenty of good reasons for NOT doing that, but then as President you can't have it both ways and complain about what other people in the DOJ are doing.

Fine. Be tired. But don’t be silly. The hard left is also tired - they are tired of failed attempts to remove PDJT. They are coming with pitchforks after the reelection. Let Barr play out. Let Durham play out. We follow THE rules instead of the left’s rules with these investigations. Then decide if you need to march.

We need to clean House (the House of Representatives)

It's not just the House. We have plenty of scumbags in the Senate as well.

I was intentionally being silly. That is why the Harrummphh! People take it too seriously and devote too much energy to it. Consider the source and move on to something more productive. That is my point.

Tweeting has several advantages.

a. He can communicate publicly with the AG without being accused of backroom deals.

b. It helps him drain the swamp (inducing the swamp ADA's to resign).

c. It puts both the Judge and the Chief Justice on notice that there is a serious problem with the federal judiciary.

You're correct ALPAPilot.

That's why Judas Roberts freaked out when the President stated the obvious, that there were "Obama" judges out there who couldn't give a hoot about the Constitution.

Chief Justice Defends Judicial Independence After Trump Attacks ‘Obama Judge’

Roberts knows the power of the judiciary stems from the public swallowing the lie that they are fair, independent, and "above politics."

How else can they demand the public accept their outrageous "rulings" that unborn children are not human beings and can be slaughtered, that men can become women, and that homosexual perverted sex can be "marriage"?
