Trump’s Pitch to Puerto Rican Voters
The Wall Street Journal ^ | 2/09/2020 | Mary Anastasia O'Grady

Opinion: How Trump Can Court Puerto Rican Voters The Americas: In the upcoming presidential election, Florida will once again be an important state to win. If Donald Trump appeals to Puerto Rican voters, he could help his chances of securing a key victory.

President Trump’s decision to host Venezuelan interim President Juan Guaidó at the State of the Union address last week was a message to Cuba and Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro that the U.S. remains committed to the cause of freedom in the region. It was also a clever political move aimed at energizing Hispanic voters in South Florida, particularly those of Cuban and Venezuelan heritage.

Hispanics are a key demographic in the race to capture Florida’s 29 electoral votes in November. When the topic arises, Miami-area escapees from communist Cuba and its satellite regimes jump to mind. But to win the state, Republicans would be smart to focus also on the large Puerto Rican community in central Florida.

Puerto Ricans are American citizens but can’t vote in presidential elections unless they reside in one of the 50 states. According to a Pew Research Center report in 2018, “Puerto Ricans have been [Florida’s] fastest-growing Hispanic-origin group over the past decade.” In the same report Pew said Puerto Ricans are now about one-third of eligible Hispanic voters in Florida, similar to the size of the Cuban-American cohort.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, the island diaspora in Florida is not preprogrammed to vote Democratic. This large slice of middle-class voters whose mother tongue is Spanish includes many skilled young people who can’t find jobs on the island. They treasure their homeland and most still have family there but for economic reasons they are in Florida.

This part is something mainland Republicans always seem to miss, writing off Puerto Ricans to their peril:

"Contrary to conventional wisdom, the island diaspora in Florida is not preprogrammed to vote Democratic".

But the island keeps voting Democrats into power.....

Puerto Rico depends on US money for its massive social programs that keep the people living a meager existence. Those that have jobs do well, but Democratic policies have driven many businesses away.

Puerto Rico’s problems are due to the fact that there are not enough people working productively.

The goal of the government should be to have as many people employed productively as possible, and as few on welfare as possible, restricted to the disabled and the elderly.

But that’s not what democrat politicians want. They want as many people on the dole as possible.

If Puerto Rico ever voted a some like Trump to run the island....the island, in five years would be the “GEM” of the entire Caribbean Basin...period!!!

Tourism would boom like never before, Maybe, some gambling in casinos handled and managed correctly without corruption and establishing aircraft maintenance facilities to serve the entire Caribbean Basin. Lufthansa Technic is already established there. The manufacturing of auto parts for new vehicles would also fit nicely.

USA Puerto Ricans better darn realize that POTUS, Donald J. Trump is in their corner...100%. Puerto Ricans on the island and the mainland USA better wise up and dump all the Democrat scum & vermin that for so many years took advantage of them...leaving most them in poverty and dependent on criminal, corrupt government on the island!!!!

Not wonder PR never has enough money to fix their problems.

Besides their natural disaster issues like hurricanes and earthquakes, the Puerto Rican government apparently is not bright enough to prevent being ripped off of money they already don't have.

Puerto Rico. The red-headed stepchild of the US.

PR made a huge mistake when they let US communists run the Navy out of Vieques. With no Vieques the Navy no longer needed Roosevelt Roads. A lot of assets and jobs out the window.

Make Marco Rubio the Czar of the island. Give him 10 years to turn it around. Executive experience. The one time darling of the gop can then run for POTUS.

I believe that Puerto Rican voters (and Jamaicans and others) can be Republicans if we reach out to them. We never reach out to them and we need to. Another group we need to get is the youth. Right now, the media is saying they want Bernie, but is it really what they want?

But will they forgive Trump tossing paper towels at them. How much was this perceived as an insult in PR, how much in Florida?? Also statements by Trump that he had given $90 million to PR, when Congress only authorized a little over $40 million and at that time PR had received less than $20M. As several here have pointed out, real development is needed.

Unintended consequences of not-so-well-thought-out solutions by liberals.

It happens time after time with those losers.
