What is unspoken here is that the Lordstown plant is designed and built to produce Chevy Cruzes. It is totally unsuitable for repurposing without essentially being rebuilt from scratch. It is a huge complex but everything from outside dimensions to wiring is geared to a specific product. Planned obsolescence, You bet.
The Lordstown plant isn’t just for Cruses, it has built every small GM car since the Chevette, then cavalier, Cobalt etc., But your point is s still somewhat true, why oh why Trump surrounds himself with political idiots who insist on saying what they are going to do, instead of just shutting up and do it. Trump won Ohio by promising to save these Lordstown jobs then GM shut it down anyway. Saying you are going to eliminate college debt forgiveness programs for doctors who serve in rural areas and reducing federal backed student loans is completely moronic, nobody is going to switch their vote or get off the couch and decide to vote cause Trump wants to whack federal student loans, ESPECIALLY when it’s never going to happen. Buy it does give the left free ammo to bash Republicans and proof that we really want to kill grandma. Nobody with an ounce of political experience should be allowed near Trump or speak for him.

Wasn’t it originally built to be the one stop production unit for the Vega (possibly the worst GM vehicle of all time)? One reason for putting the plant at Lordstown was it was supposed to eventually profit from the very large US Steel plant planned for Conneaut, which in spite of a ground breaking ceremony in 1970 was never built.
