It’s beginning to look possible, that the virus is mutating or otherwise changing towards weakness away from Wuhan. That is, it appears to be getting weaker at geographical locations away from there, even within China. Maybe environmental differences (speculation).

[Yeah, I know it’s the NYTimes, but there are a few facts in that article.]

Saw the same in individual cases in a few other articles, and we’re beginning to see the difference in some of the cases away from there. It might still be very contagious, though, and could mutate towards strength.

I always wanted to live through a zombie apocalypse but I don’t want to live through a Chinese flu apocalypse.

A lot better if you have power than otherwise.

I’m not so sure this tracks that way. It could be just that everywhere else has better medical systems than what is available in Wuhan and therefore patients have better chances.

SARS had less impact in North America in part because of the better medical systems available. It wasn’t because it was initially any less significantly dangerous, it was because resources to fight it were better and more plentiful here.

From what I’ve seen, Wuhan had rather undersized clinical resources for their regular population in normal times, which is probably a great deal of the problem - a shortage of beds and personnel, IIRC.

And no news at all has backed up your belief.

short on supplies everywhere, covering up illnesses, not enough beds, meds, nothing.

I’ll stay here for treatment!

“How bad is the Chinese medical system?”

Why would you think that?

People think Shanghai or Shenzen represents the whole country.

So why are we flying in and housing virus (plague) victims at U.S. military bases around the country?

Pentagon to provide military installations near 11 major airports for coronavirus quarantine

The identified DOD installations and the airports they could support include Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, near Honolulu International Airport; Great Lakes Training Center Navy Base, Ill., by Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport; Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, Texas, close to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport; March Air Reserve Base (ARB), Calif., by Los Angeles International Airport; Travis Air Force Base (AFB), Calif., near San Francisco International Airport; Dobbins ARB, Ga., near Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport; Fort Hamilton, N.Y., by John F. Kennedy International Airport; Naval Base Kitsap, Wash., near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport; Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, D.C., by Dulles International Airport; Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., by Newark Liberty International Airport; and Fort Custer Training Center, Mich., near Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Why are we allowing people from infected China to fly into our nation at all?

What there is of it is mostly oriented toward the affluent city-born and likely does not admit rurals.

Wuhan has terrible air pollution and unsanitary conditions in the market. Thousands protested the air quality. If your lungs are already compromised by the air pollution, I imagine a respiratory virus will affect you worse. Then there’s the Wuhan Institute of Virology that studies “deadly viruses.” What a mess.

And then spread them out over the ENTIRE nation.

I can see bringing back citizens (NOT EXPATS) but to place them all over the country is asinine and typical FERAL Government in action.

I suspect that they’re mostly (or all) Americans and/or Canadian citizens. I don’t have a problem with bringing them home, but I’d sure as hell want to be sure they’re clean before springing them loose - a system like the Japanese are applying to that boat - which is to wait until they have 14 clean days without anyone getting sick, before anyone assumed-healthy gets released.

[How bad is the Chinese medical system?]

Chinese incomes are just above Mexico’s. I assume not everyone can afford indoor heat. I wonder whether winter temperatures resulting in frigid homes are a factor in the severity and mortality rate of infections. It’s also an open question as to whether hospital wards are heated. It’s not an accident that flu season peaks in cold weather.
