Trump hints at Republican compromise in messy Georgia Senate race

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that he’s working on a compromise between U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler and U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, two Georgia Republicans who are clashing over the same seat in a November election.

The president floated the idea that one of the two could leave the race during a speech at the White House celebrating the defeat of the Democratic-led attempt to remove him from office.

“I know, Kelly, that you’re going to end up liking him a lot,” Trump said of Collins, whom the president called an “unbelievable friend.”

He added: “Something’s going to happen that’s going to be very good. I don’t know; I haven’t figured it out yet.”

The president’s remarks triggered immediate talk in Georgia GOP circles that Collins could be in line for a judgeship or another appointment, or that Loeffler could be tapped for a premier position.

"We took it as the president preparing to offer Kelly Loeffler a job she's more suited for," Collins spokesman Dan McLagan said.

A Loeffler aide, Stephen Lawson, said Trump’s comments “speak for themselves” and that the senator was focused on supporting his agenda, “fighting for Georgians” and keeping her seat in the U.S. Senate.

Both Republicans are scrambling to lock up Trump’s support, eager to tout every retweet and every supportive remark from the president as a sign he might be taking sides in their race.

So far, the president has stayed publicly neutral — although Trump privately lobbied Gov. Brian Kemp to tap Collins for the seat on three separate occasions before he appointed Loeffler to succeed retired U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson.

From the article:

“The president’s remarks triggered immediate talk in Georgia GOP circles that Collins could be in line for a judgeship or another appointment,”

From Collins’ Wikipedia entry we have this:

He attended the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving his Master of Divinity in 1996. Collins also earned his Juris Doctor from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School, in 2007.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Collins_(politician)#Early_life,_education,_and_early_career

So he has that JD, albeit not from a top-tier school. That said, he has real life experience.

Also from the article:

“The president’s remarks triggered immediate talk in Georgia GOP circles that . . . Loeffler could be tapped for a premier position.”

What the heck is a “premier position”? When I DuckDG for “United States Premier” I get a hockey league. I wonder if the writers know.

In any case, it’s interesting speculation. If Mitch can make Collins a Federal judge, I’m good with that. I’m good with other options that forego an intramural fight. I hope Trump can make a deal that makes all parties happy.

A plum ambassadorship somewhere nice.

Georgia needs a Senator like Collins.

Negative. We’re stuck with Loeffler. The woman is already running commercials.

She needs a haircut though. All I see is hair, hair, hair.

Kelly needs to go, period.

Trump needs to cause problems to them, not be dragged in by people who purposefully cause problems to gain leverage over him.

Better than an Ivy based upon what I have seen.

So he has that JD, albeit not from a top-tier school.

What the hell kind of comment is that?

Washington is wall-to-wall lawyers from self-described, so-called top-tier schools and look at the state of our Federal govt.

Did Collins not just prove to you what he is made of or are you deaf, dumb and blind?

Loeffler? What had she ever done other than never miss a Junior League meeting?

There’s an argument to be made that Collins is the one causing problems.

In any case, that sort of thinking is not going to get us to a win-win-win for Collins, Loeffler, and the party.

Today Trump acknowledged Loeffler way before he acknowledged Collins.

I think that’s a sign.

Calm down, I like Collins very well. We just need to be ready for the criticisms that will arise. This is just good planning.

And I would scatter Ivy League graduates in the permanent bureaucracy to the four winds, and make them get real jobs, were it within my power. Especially the State Department, but really the whole thing.

Whoever runs this Fall is running in a special election to fill the remaining 2 years of Isakson’s term. Assuming they win, they have to run again in 2022 for a full 6 year term.

Loeffler has the wherewithal to self-fund those two races. This is non-trivial. This is probably why Kemp chose her.

Let her serve out the year, give her some cushy appointment and then Collins can take over in January 2021.

The special election is a “jungle primary” in which the top two will advance to a runoff if nobody gets a majority. What the president and the RNC need to do is get out the GOP vote to make sure that the top two are Collins and Loeffler, in whichever order.

That way, we win (more or less) either way.

So are you good with Kelly Loeffler getting appointed out of nowhere by Kemp then almost immediately gets appointed to a seat on the Agriculture committee which oversees the CFTC which is the main regulator for her husband’s business? Her husband owns the New York stock exchange. Oh and by the way they had to make David Perdue step down so she could have the seat. This chick is bad news.

>> Oh and by the way they had to make David Perdue step down so she could have the seat.

That’s completely incorrect, which makes me question the rest of what you posted.

David Perdue is running for re-election for another 6 year term for his seat as the now senior Senator from Georgia. He was elected in Nov 2014 for his first term, which I remember very well as I had chatted with him at a campaign event and had some personal reasons for connecting with him. This is separate from the special election to fill the last 2 years of Isakson’s term, which is what Loeffler and Collins are running for currently. Get your facts straight.
