Senate Majority Mitch McConnell took to the chamber floor Tuesday to say the only high crime and misdemeanor committed by President Trump was his defeat of Hillary Clinton in 2016, pushing back against House Democrats charges in the nonsense impeachment.
That is the original sin of this presidency that he won and they lost, Mr. McConnell said.
The Kentucky Republican pointed the finger at House Democrats, arguing they were the ones to abuse power, saying they pursued the only partisan impeachment in American history due to their hatred of this president and fear they cannot beat him in the next election.
The impeachment power exists for a reason. It is no nullity, but invoking it on a partisan whim to settle three-year-old political scores it insults the framers design, he said.
Mr. Trump was impeached on a party-line vote by House Democrats on Dec. 18, charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, stemming from a July phone call with the Ukrainian president where Mr. Trump requested a probe into his political rival, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden while withholding financial aid to Ukraine.
The Senate is expected to vote Wednesday to acquit Mr. Trump of the charges.
Mr. McConnell said it was the first impeachment by the House of Representatives that was unbound by criminal law, saying the charge of obstruction of Congress is nonsense because executive privilege has always been litigated in impeachment proceedings.

Actually acquittal on BOTH.
I guess Mitch tried to bend the president over a barrel but the American people have had it. The massive Iowa Republican turn out the not see massive turn out by Democrats and huge debacle to kick off the primaries and cacus. Either that or he was done and the president is sore. This has gone on way to long but it’s just back fireing on all the right people. Epic times in American politics
I think landslide talk is dangerous. People lose incentive to bother to vote.
Some perhaps, but the thought of a landslide can also excite and inspire.
I had the honor of participating in both of Ronald Reagans landslides, and although the first one was a bit of a pleasant surprise, the second one was very much anticipated, and yes, talked about.
Did landslide talk make anyone lose incentive to vote for RR in 1984? Hardly. The way I remember the feeling, it was like being offered a chance to be part of history - it was the foretelling of an event you would not want to miss.
In 1969, if I had any idea Woodstock was going to be such a big deal, I probably would have gone with my band mates instead of working (for peanuts) that weekend at the local auto parts store.
Democrats might get discouraged and stay home if they hear too much talk of landslide - not Trump supporters.
Collins will vote to acquit!!

Maybe I should offer to let Spartacus Jazz Hands borrow my string of pearls, he’s in full drama queen fainting and pearl-clutching mode.
One other great piece of news just now: Occasional Cortex is boycotting SOTU. Oh boo hoo I’m SO SAD!!!
Great news, more winning.
Here I think I would disagree with you to make the point that the president understands how social media and has transformed voting in to a huge massive like and a proactive thing you can do. It’s the link between being the #1 influencer on the internets and something they can do to help their idea of themselves and their online community. Being down with the struggle is a easy as following his feed and voting. I’m doing a terrible job of explaining this. But people are excited to vote for him real excited
Jazz Hands has gone WAY over his ten minute limit of fake crying. His squeaky fake crying voice is AWFUL.
Somebody please tase him or take him out with a tranquilizer gun.
UGH, apparently misses all the attention.
Jazz Hands is now throwing in slavery, Selma, Stonewall, women’s suffrage, gay rights, Strom Thurmond, ZZZzzzzz.....
No wonder Jazz Hands failed miserably as a presidential candidate.
Listening to him fake cry and rant is pure torture.
Good - that leaves Mitt all alone. He wont have the balls to be the only Republican to vote to convict.
I hope he convicts.
Good - that leaves Mitt all alone
The cheese stands alone!
The cheese stands alone!
Heigh ho the dairy-o
The cheese stands alone!
Why would you want that?
Because that's what most Dems will do and then perhaps the voters of Utah will elect a Republican Senator.
I understand, but on the other hand, having all Republicans on board for acquittal, including RINO neverTrumpers, sends a powerful message to the public that the impeachment was purely partisan, therefore illegitimate.
He’ll end up voting to acquit...I think :)
I think so too - out of cowardice more than anything else.
If Mitt stays true to form he’ll abstain.
