CA sheriff forced to reveal concealed carriers’ identities to newspaper

A sheriff in California is being legally forced to release sensitive information about private citizens who have a concealed carry permit.

On Monday, Sutter County Sheriff Brandon Barnes alerted citizens who have a concealed carry permit that their name, permit number, date of permit issue and expiration, is being turned over to the San Francisco Chronicle due to a public record request issued on Jan. 10, CBS13 reported.

Barnes wrote in a Tuesday letter that he personally declined turning over the information, but the Office of County Counsel advised him that he is legally obligated to turn over the information.

“The San Francisco Chronicle has not indicated why they want the information or how they intend to use the information,” Barnes added.

Copies of the letter will be sent out to the relevant concealed carry permit holders when the sheriff turns over their information.

San Francisco Chronicle Editor in Chief Audrey Cooper told CBS13 that they have no intention of releasing license holder’s names or other private information.

She added that she felt “deeply disturbed” that the sheriff would want to tell law-abiding citizens that the media have their information.

The Supreme Court needs to substantially narrow the power of the press especially for political witch hunts

This seems like it should be illegal. When you apply for a CC license, do you sign a waiver that your personal information can be disclosed? If not, it shouldn’t be. This rubs me the wrong way not even due to a gun issue, but the right to privacy.

“San Francisco Chronicle Editor in Chief Audrey Cooper told CBS13 that they have no intention of releasing license holder’s names or other private information.”

She just gave away their plan.

The road to Tyranny is paved with "no intentions".

The cheek of these people.

They went after everybody that funded support for Prop 8 in the same way.

This is tantamount to harassment.

Others should make a request to reveal concealed-carry holders in San Francisco. Only a half-dozen to ten allowed, for the most part libs. At one time Dianne Feinstein was a concealed-carry holder, until recently when she was outed. Yes, the hypocrite who wants to take away other peoples’ guns but keep her own.

So, what are the home addresses for everyone working at the Chronicle?

This was done on at least one occasion: 2013; The Journal News, NYC. They published the names and addressed of 33,614 gun owners and then

"Personal information about editors and writers at the paper has been posted online, including their home addresses and information about where their children attended school..."

Yep, this and what’s going on in VA is just inviting escalation back and forth until real violence is unleashed on all sides. It’s not just home or work, you would have to be careful where you park your car outside, anywhere unseen. The potential for ugliness here is off the scale with stuff like this.

These people really don’t have a clue about how much they’re despised, do they? I mean, they think that they will never be held accountable for the shady s**t they do. A reckoning will come, bet on it.

Barnes said he will always be committed to “protecting the rights of our citizens, and those rights afforded to us by our Second Amendment.”

Except when he won't.
