China has admitted it was too slow to react to the coronavirus outbreak which has sparked a global panic and left at least 213 people dead - amid claims that Beijing could be covering up a higher death toll.

The secretary of the ruling Communist party in Wuhan said the virus's impact on the world 'would have been less' if measures had been taken sooner.

The killer virus has spread around the world with the first cases in Britain confirmed today and governments scrambling to close their borders and retrieve their worried citizens from Wuhan.

China has since imposed a drastic quarantine on Wuhan, where the virus is believed to have jumped from wild animals at a city market and infected humans.

Man...yesterday I thought the death toll was 120? Now 200 and counting?

The first cases were noted in early December, in Wuhan. Around 40 days passed before any reports became public.

China is acting like it’s a much bigger problem than 213 dead people in a metropolitan area of 11 million. Who in the Chinese bureaucracy would want to deliver honest bad news? Do they even know, one way or the other?

Henninger had a great interview with Varney yesterday regarding this subject discussing how completely irresponsible China is. They are constantly creating worldwide public health problems by their obfuscation.

A horrendous record for a country supposedly aspiring to be a first world nation but are really an organized crime syndicate.

Well, the first death wasn’t until Jan 9, then 2nd death Jan 15. I don’t think they realized it was a problem til then. Will probably repeat the same scenario in many other countries.

The central government bureaucrats always find a scapegoat to imprison or execute. No one wants to draw the short straw.

I don’t think the mortality rate is as high as the panic-mongers are saying. The internet-enhanced MSM hypes everything these days.

In the densely populated areas of the NE US, every snowstorm is made to sound like the end of the world. It’s all to get eyeballs. Media outlets who don’t join the hype-fest risk being ignored.

Yes, they were a little slow.

Would we have acted as swiftly and decisively?

Discuss, show your work...

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

I’m sure we have many bureaucrats who wouldn’t want the public to ‘panic’ and ‘cause a recession’.

Our methods of doing this would be different than in China...but not sure our bureaucrats would behave any differently.

Plus, from personal experience, we have our share of ‘doomers’ who think there are too many people on the planet and we need a good epidemic to help with the ‘climate crisis’.

YMMV, as always.

213 people dead from the virus while 1000 times more dead the standard flu and other causes? Why is 0.1% deaths receiving so much attention? Sure the virus is new mutation and people have not developed immunity from lack of exposure before so it can spread faster than common cold. But the death rate is only about 2% for those infected with this corona-virus.

And in the good ole USA, only 5 have been infected (all had connection to city of Wuhan in China) while 20 million Americans come down with the standard flu every year. Size does matter!

This video was supposedly shot in early January. Note the level 3 bio suits. SARS is a BL3 disease. They knew they had something that required a level 3 suit.

I hope you are correct, but the stats from the resolved cases, resolved by death, vs resolved by recovery are worrisome.

People die more often than they recover. 53-54% fatalities. Granted, this is a bit skewed by these being the sickest cases, but I worry that the big slug of sick people right behind them will have a similar outcome in time.

My biggest concern isn’t that this will be an ebola like 90% mortality crash the whole system.

My concern is that this will crash our ICU’s. And the economy as everyone feels like crap for a week/10 days and stays home from work (as they should, if you are sick, don’t infect your coworkers).

Yup.

During the 1900 plague outbreak in San Fransisco, TPTB never did impose a quarantine, plague eventually spread to the local ground squirrels, and from there to the entire western US.

And when the same city experienced a "gay plague", the city refused to shut down the bath houses.

That’s the equivalent of saying why are people worried about the fire in Mrs. O’Leary’s barn? So far, only her cow has died, poor thing.
