An activist once lauded for his work to end sexual violence against minors admitted Thursday to having sex with an underage boy and possessing child pornography featuring prepubescent children.
Joel Davis, 24 and a former Columbia University student, now faces up to life behind bars, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman announced. Davis started the international group Youth to End Sexual Violence.
“As he admitted today, Joel Davis arranged to meet a 15-year-old boy for sex and engaged in illegal sexual activity with the 15-year-old,” Berman said. “He also possessed child pornography that included children under the age of 12.”

I can’t believe they disclosed it was a gay thing; normally that little detail is buried (the gender of the victim is omitted - specifically when it is a gay crime, usually involving female teachers).
If it involved a female teacher, even a female Gay thing, the teacher would be looking at little to no jail time. I'm not saying the guy shouldn't be facing a long prison stretch. I'm pointing out the disparity in passing out sentences for the same crime of sexual assault of a minor.
You’re right; I was pointing out that the gender of the victim wouldn’t have been disclosed if the perp and victim were female.
The judge who let May Kay Latourneau skate on her first offense should’ve been jailed with her when she committed her second.
Male judges and men on juries let female perps off lightly.

Lived next to an FBI agent for a few years. Shortly after we moved in, I noticed that every time our kids were outside shooting hoops in the driveway, he’d come over to the fence and strike up a conversation with them. When my wife or I would come outside, he’d walk away.
A few months later I found out from the neighbor on the other side of his house that the FBI guy works in child sex crimes, and that he had also noticed his weird behavior, always talking to his 4 young daughters in their driveway. It bother him enough that he put up a solid 6’ fence.
The next time I saw the FBI guy I told him that I’d heard a lot about him from our neighbors and that he’s not to talk to my kids. He just stared at me with a blank face. I walked away.
Never had a problem again, but he gave off an enormous creep-o vibe. No kids, living in a 5 bedroom house in a family development.

I think it’s predictable. They’re not thinking of the women as criminals and abusers but as sex partners.
Disgusting; I know FReepers joke about it (”guilty” or “not guilty”) but don’t assume they are serious, or would give a pass to those perps.
Women do get lighter or no sentences for sexual abuse, especially of teenaged boys. They often get lighter sentences for other crimes. The vast majority of judges and a preponderance of jurors are men. A reasonable conclusion from this is that a critical percentage of men do not take criminal behavior seriously when the perp is a woman.
I’m not questioning that they may get lighter sentences, but jury verdicts must be unanimous; women (as judges and jurors) bear responsibility for this as well.
Some, but less in proportion. Jury verdicts must be unanimous, but that is guilty/not guilty. Sentencing is generally done by judges.
