Paris - New climate models show carbon dioxide is a more potent greenhouse gas than previously understood, a finding that could push the Paris treaty goals for capping global warming out of reach, scientists have told AFP.
Developed in parallel by separate teams in half-a-dozen countries, the models -- which will underpin revised UN temperature projections next year -- suggest scientists have for decades consistently underestimated the warming potential of CO2.
Vastly more data and computing power has become available since the current Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projections were finalised in 2013.
"We have better models now," Olivier Boucher, head of the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace Climate Modelling Centre in Paris, told AFP, adding that they "represent current climate trends more accurately".
"If you think the new models give a more realistic picture, then it will, of course, be harder to achieve the Paris targets, whether it is 1.5 or two degrees Celsius," scientist Mark Zelinka told AFP.
Zelinka, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, is the lead author of the first peer-reviewed assessment of the new generation of models, published earlier this month in Geophysical Research Letters.

“a finding that could push the Paris treaty goals for capping global warming out of reach”
consistent with having only 11 years left before every living creature on the planet earth is doomed to destruction ...
Must be approaching grant renewal time.
Nothing can be done about it. Ok then - why all the hysteria?
So theyll actually have to force India and China to reduce their CO2 emissions?
Good luck with that!
It’s plant food you dummies.
CO2 is nothing when compared to water vapor but let’s all ignore that because Al Gore hasn’t figured out a way how to profit from alternative-ocean companies.
I would think that experiments in the lab or elsewhere might be a better determinant for the potency of carbon dioxide.
A climate model is probably a computer simulation which is programmed to provide output based on inputs. Computer programming seems like a poor way to discover the potency of a greenhouse gas. Unless, of course, the programmer really just wants to show that.
It’s all in the makeup.
time to double down on propaganda
“Vastly more data and computing power has become available . . .”
The power of the computers used is almost irrelevant compared to the applicability of the models used - in particular, how one models the feedback loops associated with the teeny amount of warming expected for the small increases in CO2 (tens of parts per million over the past few decades).
And how one compares the predictions modeled in those cases depends a whole lot more on the quality of the data used in the evaluation than it does on the amount of that data.
In neither case (the quality of the modeling and the quality of the temperature data) have the alarmists been able to make a sufficiently convincing argument.
“...carbon dioxide is a more potent greenhouse gas than previously understood...”
OK....Let’s pump CO2 into greenhouses so our plants can grow even bigger....

Okay, so we can just go about life as we always have...
