It is Neil Shaffers job to get Donald Trump re-elected in a patch of rural Iowa that saw the largest swing in voters in the country from Americas first black president to one of its most divisive in 2016. But even Shaffer, the Republican party chair in Howard county, is not sure hell be voting for Trump again.
The voters who migrated from Barack Obama to Trump in the county on Iowas border with Minnesota were among nearly 8 million across the US who switched parties four years ago. In swing states such as Iowa they were decisive in delivering the White House to the Republicans
Shaffer is confident that Trump can win their support again. He argues that what the presidents opponents see as his negatives his litany of false claims, Twitter battles and impeachment will only strengthen a presidential campaign again built around the image of the outsider fighting the system.
Hes still a Don Quixote. People like that. They like a fighter, said Shaffer.
But the Republican county chair, a former farmer who works in river conservation, is not without doubts. He calls himself a 60/40 Republican because he likes most of what he sees about Trump. Shaffer thinks the president has been good for the economy and is pleased with his conservative picks for the supreme court.
Shaffer also rates Trump for not getting the country into any big wars, unlike the last Republican in the White House at least for now, as the world awaits the fallout of the US assassination of the Iranian general Qassem Suleimani.
But Shaffer struggles with Trumps divisiveness, deeply dislikes his hostility to immigrants and wishes he would get off Twitter...

OK, so the voting tallies can be pumped up, and the MSM can provide us deplorables with the actual news?
Well if this R isn’t 100 percent sure then the election is over. We lost :)
I could never post from the garbagean because I could never look at it in the first place.
Take a strong stomach.
Lived in Cresco for a while before I joined the Army.
The left runs strong in some residents of Howard County.
Gee. Thanks Guardian.
When this Socialist RAG prints out anything remotely positive towards Trump it says something.
.cause nobody running against him is the least bit SANE!
But Shaffer struggles with Trumps divisiveness, deeply dislikes his hostility to immigrants and wishes he would get off Twitter.
What a light in the loafers man!
It took Trump to show people just how insane they really are.
“Then he started talking about the wall and calling all Mexican people criminals.”
Uhm. No he didn’t.
They used to call them “prairie populists.” Now? Bolshviks or at a minimum, Socialists.
People forget that a candidate never runs for president in a vacuum. Most people that I know don’t vote for a candidate. They vote against the other one. Trump has his issues, but he is head and shoulders above any of the competition. That is why they were so hell bent on impeaching him, as if it will matter.
All the left has in the house is the court of public opinion. And they are nursing it for all it’s worth. Unfortunately, it required the jumping of too many sharks. They had to sell something equivalent to the concept of getting jews to vote for Hitler. Not an easy task.
Not gonna happen
Oh great. A guy who is head of the local Republican Party and self identifies as 60% Republican and 40% what? Bernie? Anyone see a problem here?
They lost me at “litany of false claims.”
“republican party chair” is a “60/40 republican”
Anyone see a problem here?
I know we are conservatives first, but if you are going to chair your party’s committee, shouldn’t you be closer to 100%. Isn’t that the problem we have with never trumpers in Congress?
I venture to say if he was the democratic chair, that statement would be the end of his position, but of course the stupid party just embraces his “independence” or whatever stupid concept they like to use.
The guy is a LOSER.. A 60/ 40 Republican( RINO). Get him out. Put someone in his place who backs the President 100 per cent!!!!!
I think we see the problem with the IA GOP.
Same as AZ GOP.
ANTIFA,BLM, OWS and the resist lunatics dont play well with sane, hard working people of every generation.
The headline says it all. He makes me crazy sometimes but none of the democrats running inspire me to choose them. If anything it’s quite the opposite
