Does not matter.

You do not touch diplomats even in time of war. The most you are allowed to do is expel them.

This is a sign to the entire world that they need to pull all their diplomats from Iran because they are no longer in compliance with literally centuries of law and custom.

Like thugs everywhere, they only respect power — and the willingness to use it. Anything less is perceived as weakness.

Even Hitler and Stalin recognized diplomatic immunity.

The minute he got back, the Brit security forces would have issued him another card and deactivated his old one. The papers wouldn’t work either as they don’t control access to the embassy.

Britain isn’t that stupid.

Also, post-2000, there’s been rumors about how people who try to breach British embassies just ‘disappearing’. Much of the UK may be spineless lefties these days, but MI6 and their other less-visible entities aren’t.

Yep.

Of course Iran does not have the greatest of track records when it comes to diplomatic immunity. But even last time they tried to use cutouts to distance themselves from the fact that they had violated diplomatic immunity.

If they are not even bothering to do that now it could get very bad indeed.

Untrue. 11/1/20, and that’s in Israeli dating where the day comes before the month, as it is in Europe and Australia as well.

I don’t think he was interested in goats. Maybe why they let him go. They wanted to party.

Oh, I agree, civilized states understand the accepted rules of diplomacy. However, Iran is a medieval, barbaric state and has been since the downfall of the Shah. All countries should inform their nationals if they go to Iran, they’re on their own, then cut diplomatic relations.

I wonder if the Mullahs found out about the Ambassador being arrested and said, release him immediately, given the reaction of their people to the downed airplane it would not surprise me

Apparently he was photographing the anti Pelosi/ayatollah protests when detained. Poor guy is probably out one expensive camera.

I don’t see that date at the site.

Can you quote and link your findings?

Oftentimes it is. Our people liked to be liked instead of demanding respect, which is all that really matters.

Nothing like detaining your ambassador to encourage you to enter a trade agreement./s

There is a “depends” here. If detained becuuse they did not know he was a diplomat and held until he was proven to be a diplomat .... then that is an apology for the ignorance of the cops / guards.

If they KNEW he was a diplomat and was not questioned but rather interrogated .... that is whole nother ballgame.
