Trump Allies Explore Buyout of Conservative Channel Seeking to Compete With Fox News
Wall Street Journal Online ^ | 01/10/2020 | Juliet Chung, Corrie Driebusch and Rebecca Ballhaus

Allies of President Trump are pursuing an effort to acquire right-leaning news channel One America News Network, according to people familiar with the matter, in a bid to shake up a conservative media market that has been dominated by Fox News.

The investment firm Hicks Equity Partners is looking to acquire the channel and is pitching other wealthy GOP donors to arrange a bid of roughly $250 million for the channel’s parent company, the people said. The firm is owned by the family of Thomas Hicks Jr., co-chairman of the Republican National Committee and a close friend of Donald Trump Jr.

The efforts come as Mr. Trump has periodically rebuked Fox News for being too critical—despite its opinion-show hosts’ general support of his administration—and has praised One America News Network. The channel’s opinion programming is known among its cable-news peers for its praise of Donald Trump and its advocacy for conservative causes.

Its behind a paywall, but this may be interesting. The WSJ puts a spin on it by association, IMHO, by implied intent of making a pro Trump network.

That may or may not be the case, but I tend to believe it's mainly to have an outlet for straight up news.

There are a lot of question Mark's around the direction Fox is taking, especially with the Murdoch sons taking over and weasels like Paul Ryan who have more or less stated intent to "influence".

Good thing or bad thing if it happens?

I think those looking at this are smart enough to know that the reason Fox shot to its number one spot over the last 20 some years is because their coverage was "mostly" balanced.

I enjoy watching OAN. They have some good programming and some good talent. They just need a more relaxed atmosphere. I like that there is actually some me international news, it’s nice to see what is happening in the world outside of DC.

Someone needs to buy it, and polish the presentation.

it’s hard to take a news channel seriously (not that we have much to compare it to) when it comes off as a bit too You-Tube ish, and sometimes it’s a bit too opinionated.

Just get some people with an old school news reader voice from the 60s-80s to just READ THE NEWS.

I like OAN just the way it is. I found out about it because they would always carry the Trump rallies and I make it a point to watch all his rallies. It’s nice to get away from the crap Fox is putting up these days.

An influx of cash with a little fresh talent would help. We watch OANN more and more, but the biggest problem is the unavailability of the channel on most cable providers.

When the president leaves office in 2025 I can see him running this network.

Fox News wants to be a mini-mi of MSNBC and they will likely pull that off. They are off to a good start.

Early last week, Outnumbered had a decent panel. I thought they had learned something, but later in the week, they had Marie Barf on, and as she was ranting about how “disgusting” PDT is, turned the channel and didn’t turn it back. I’ll try OAN again.

They need to buy one of the established networks at fire sale prices so they don’t have to go through the whole “now you have to get the providers to give you a slot which they won’t do because of their bias. “

I like OAN just the way it is.

Agreed. Though OANN will receive a wider audience if bought out, it will then be accused of being partisan where now their news seems truly balanced.

I’m neither for nor against the idea but after watching how FOX took a distinct downturn away from all things conservative (while still claiming to be “fair and balanced”) I believe corporate entities like FNC in general, wind up leaning left, even when that wasn’t the original plan. That’s the nature of humanity, nothing remains static, it always moves one direction or another.

Could OAN use a bit of spit and polish, sure, do their regular “news readers” look fresh out of school, they do because they are but that’s just the reason their owner said they came out of liberal jschools but he hired them not to lean in any direction but merely to deliver the copy as written!

If and when OAN accepts a buyout, it will have a “pro-Trump” group at the top, not all of them conservative. Down the road as those original owners die off or retire, who will the newbies be?

FNC was true to its core because of Roger Ailes, period!

Let loose a bunch of jealous cats who didn’t think they were getting ahead as quickly as they thought they should and bingo, sexual harassment charges began flying, the flack also catching great folk because there were big bucks involved!

For my money, buy another network or start one by yourselves and compete in the marketplace of ideas!

[[They just need a more relaxed atmosphere.]]

Yep they aren’t quite as polished and relaxed and pro feeling as msm unfortunately- plus they aren’t available on TV everywhere which really hurts their chances of going mainstram really- I know if we were able to get it on cable we’d switch to them and leave fox behind- but we can’t right now- unfortunately-

How about buying Fox News?

I’ve heard some of these old newspapers and magazines can be had on the cheap.

With the exception of a couple shows at night, Faux has been turning left
since the sons took over.
Buying OAN would be a great business decision.
Find a way to get Tucker, Hannity and Ingraham and it would be a Gold mine.

“after watching how FOX took a distinct downturn away from all things conservative”

Rupert Murdoch turned control of Fox News over to his two leftist sons a few years ago or so. Which is why the drift away from all things conservative
