For decades, the share of U.S. children living with a single parent has been rising, accompanied by a decline in marriage rates and a rise in births outside of marriage. A new Pew Research Center study of 130 countries and territories shows that the U.S. has the worlds highest rate of children living in single-parent households.
Almost a quarter of U.S. children under the age of 18 live with one parent and no other adults (23%), more than three times the share of children around the world who do so (7%). The study, which analyzed how peoples living arrangements differ by religion, also found that U.S. children from Christian and religiously unaffiliated families are about equally likely to live in this type of arrangement.
In comparison, 3% of children in China, 4% of children in Nigeria and 5% of children in India live in single-parent households. In neighboring Canada, the share is 15%.
While U.S. children are more likely than children elsewhere to live in single-parent households, theyre much less likely to live in extended families. In the U.S., 8% of children live with relatives such as aunts and grandparents, compared with 38% of children globally.
Researchers have different ways of categorizing single-parent households. In this report, single-parent households have a sole adult living with at least one biological, step or foster child under age 18. Some other organizations, including the U.S Census Bureau, also include households that have grandparents, other relatives or cohabiting partners present.
Around the world, living in extended families is linked with lower levels of economic development: Financial resources stretch further and domestic chores such as childcare are more easily accomplished when shared among several adults living together.
The U.S., like other economically advanced countries, particularly in Europe and northern Asia, has relatively small households overall.

Umm yeah, because we pay them to be that way.
Fruits of the welfare state.
My Catholic diocese took a survey about 5 years ago and found that 55% of CATHOLIC children in our area are being raised in single parent households.
The Catholic Church does not officially recognize ANY divorce.
When you’ve lost this crowd...
So the U.S. also has the highest rate of dumb sluts in the world?
Ah, yes. I am woman. Hear me whine, moan, nag and complain. And watch me flush civilization down the toilet.
Anything us old geezers(and women) can do to help these young women? I was thinking rides to school or babysit for an hour or two in a pinch. I’m too old to have an ulterior motive. There are plenty of us out there that don’t work anymore and and have the time to help out. Just no Trayvon Martins.
Not so dumb. They can pull down a cool $60k a year just for “flat backing”.
Nothing has changed except how we do business.
It’s demand and supply. When you have an unlimited demand for fatherless children you get an unlimited supply of them.
Yup.
It hard for me to refer to a drug addled lazy welfare queen as a “parent”.
“U.S. has worlds highest rate of children living in single-parent households”
So, who gets to live in the basement while waiting for the gubmint check to arrive, the parent or the child?
“Umm yeah, because we pay them to be that way.”
Good point. You could also say that in a more prosperous society you don’t want to be bothered with other relatives in the house.
I know several great divorced ladies that seem to want to stay single. Well, they might say they’d like to be married again but don’t. I say to myself, it’s up to you, ladies.
The government subsidizes single parenting and gets more of it.
The way things work in this country today, yer just settin’ yerself up.
Just remember and never forget
“No good turn goes unpunished.”
And run the risk of #metoo or child abuse lawsuits?
HARD PASS.
