President Trump on Wednesday gave the most honest, direct speech about Iran's dictatorship that has ever given by an American president. It was a refreshing break from the lies and self-deception that have characterized much of the American establishments efforts to avoid thinking about it.
Watching the various reactions to the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, I have been struck by how historically ignorant most politicians and commentators are and how our political-diplomatic language and mindset block us from reality.
The reality is: Iran's dictatorship has been waging war against the United States for more than 40 years.
I was a freshman in House of Representatives in 1979 when the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini became the dictator of Iran.
Khomeini maneuvered brilliantly from Paris to Tehran. He gave President Jimmy Carters administration smooth reassurances that he feared the Americans too much to be a threat. Once in power, however, Khomeini was quite clear about his hostility to the United States.
For the last 40 years, I have watched the Iranian dictatorship wage war on America.
On Nov. 4, 1979 protesters chanting Death to America seized the U.S. Embassy in the Iranian capital of Tehran in complete violation of international law.
Host governments have an obligation to protect embassies. But, in fact, the Iranian dictatorship used the embassy seizure to pressure the United States.
When it was clear President Carter would not respond forcefully to the attack on our embassy and the hostage taking, Khomeini said the Americans cant do a damn thing against us, which became slogan in Iran.
~snip~
President Trump's speech was a good warning that the Iranian dictators are misjudging Trump as much as they misjudged Reagan.
We may finally be on a path to ending the 40-year war.

I’ve been saying that for the last 40 years. Of course, I’m biased because a high school friend and classmate was one of the 52 American diplomats held hostage for 444 days. He was a State Dept communications specialist.
Unfortunately, it’s not just liberals. If you haven’t seen the disgusting public statement by Sen. Lee today you need to watch it.
It was disgusting. And, right beside him was Rand, the apple does not fall far from the tree, Paul.
Where were the two “principled” losers when Obama targeted 2800 people for assassination with Reaper drones?
Where were they when Obama used Reapers to assassinate two American Citizens when they went to fight with ISIS?
Yet, they Grandstand when our president takes out who Patraeus, called a far more dangerous and impactful terrorist than both Bin Laden and Baghdadi.
F those two losers. I don’t normally express this level of disgust and disdain publicly but, that Lee POS has really pissed me off. What is it with Utah that they repeatedly send duplicitous _ssholes to Congress?

Iranian
I remember when Khadafi was killed and Hillary Clinton went on TV and said “He came, he saw, he DIED” and LAUGHED about it..and no one and I mean NO ONE said a peep about it
This shit is not going to end as long as the mullahs control the Iranian regime. They’re “Twelver’s”, Qud in Iranian means Jerusalem because that is there goal along with controlling the entire region. They will not stop.
We’ve been at war since the Barbary Wars.
Saw the Mike Lee ranting sweating diatribe. Disgusting! This is a guy who couldnt run a Benghazi oversight properly. I am surprised theres not a big long thread here on FR talking about what he said today. But once again, FR is quite behind.
Bkmk
This appears to reeeeaally a good read.
Most of the GOP Senators are Bush League Republicans who are all for guarding every border in the world but ours.
Liberals think America surrendered.

Hell, Scumbo gave Iran billions to continue its assault on the West
Great read. Not only Liberals, but most Conservatives and just about everyone else is ignorant of the history between Iran and the US. I was a young Airman serving overseas in 1979 and I remember it like it was yesterday. We could have ended it then and there (and many times since), but we didn’t, and we are still seeing the results and paying the price.
Well said.
The very sad thing is that Iran had been westernizing for years and Shah Pahlavi was open to it.
Iran at the time he was overthrown was the most modern country in the ME.
With help from the U.S. (Carter) the revolution may have been stopped but Jimmah wasn’t interested.
“What is it with Utah that they repeatedly send duplicitous _ssholes to Congress?”
Holier than thou. It’s inculcated from a very early age.
Puppet masters hiding in plain sight. Proxyism works when there is noise and dishonesty in the dessemination and interpretaion of info. Iran has been masterful in sliding through world events as a shadowy hand for four decades. They seem awfully unbalanced now that they are being called out in clear and plain speech. (Not to mention a few well placed munitions.)
The alphabet agencies can spy on Americans but cannot identify and eliminate individuals in foreign countries who have killed Americans who defend these alphabet agencies. Thanks for doing something, Chief.
Why is the POS Nidal Malik Hasan still alive?
The sad truth is that the hostages in Teheran, Iran should have been forsaken and Teheran nuked in 1979. I simply do not understand why humans are so stupid that they let would-be, world-rulers in third-world schick-holes push them around for 40 years.
Thanks very much for the link and comment.
