There were astroturf activists on campus (I was in college at the time) doing what astroturf a-holes do, with printed signs on handles, a megaphone jihadist telling the washed up, old-left, fat-assed idiots what to repeat as they circled, and a tape that was circulating (I actually heard it before it wound up broadcast somewhere and everywhere) that purported to be a recording of a stormy Iranian cabinet meeting wherein the Shah wanted to fight and whether a crackdown would be a good idea (obviously it was a fake piece of agitprop).
Zbig wanted the Shah to crack down, but the POS Carter and POS Mondale were agreed, let the Shah be overthrown, y'know, because, **** Iran, **** the Middle East, and **** America.
The overthrow was probably arranged by the purveyors of worldwide jihad -- they have resources, arms, training, money, and recognize no national boundaries, IOW, the USSR and its then-allies. All across Iran the jihadists attacked police stations, roadblocks, border patrols, government facilities of all kinds, and the it was orchestrated, simulataneous, nationwide.
