According to the article he holds both French and Lebanese citizenship. Good luck extraditing him from there. (Then again, it may be worse that a Japanese jail) .... ;>)
Or he knows he’s as guilty as sin and has no hope of being found not guilty.
If you have tons of money in off shore accounts, you are hopelessly guilty why not run.
There are a few Americans in Cuba for just that reason.

Japan is rather cagy about publishing unproven charges.
It makes sense in a way. Publishing unproven accusations about a company could really damage a company.
Alleged financial crimes, but nothing that sounds super serious (like major fraud on investors would be) - more like hiding assets, underreporting income and misusing company assets for personal use. I haven’t seen any numbers, though.

I’m glad he did. The Nissan board set him up and then crushed him.
Basically he was fighting to have Renault combine with Nissan to give Renault a bigger customer base and the Nissan board said no. He kept on pushing the issue so the board basically reported to the courts all the taxes he evaded and the court crushed him.
In Japan, they can keep you for almost 30 without a charge and interview you relentlessly and renew that status several times. Nissan basically used this and the criminal charges to get rid of him, because they knew for over a decade all the money he was amassing and how.
They wouldn’t treat a Japanese exec like this, I’m sure.

This guy was the same thing for Renault and Nissan as Lee Iacocca for the US auto industry.
You do know that Japan still has their “Rubber Hose” squad’s, to ensure confession before trial?
Nissan did not build pieces of crap during the time before Ghosn, however.
The government wanted Nissan to remain a Japanese company and with a threat of takeover by Renault they were going to do everything in their power to take him out. Arrest on an extremely flimsy charge of underreporting income, interrogate without a lawyer, strip civil liberties to the point of being unable to mount a defense, force a plea bargain deal that would allow him to resign — it is absolutely 100% this would never have happened to a Japanese CEO, or any crony of Abe’s government for that matter.
He has Lebanese citizenship also - he has relatives there and in Lebanon his extended family (I assume Catholic militia links) will protect him and shelter him armed with guns against any attempt to arrest him. Smart move. To me it seems Japan went after him because he was a foreigner interloper in Japan’s closed economic system. A lesson to so called free traders.
