"Richard Jewell" flops at the box office its opening weekend following controversy

The weekend box office numbers are in, and one particular film flopped after facing controversy ahead of its debut. Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell" raked in only $5 million its opening weekend, about half of what was expected, according to IMDB's Box Office Mojo. The film faced criticism over its depiction of a real-life female reporter, Kathy Scruggs, who is played by actress Olivia Wilde.

"Richard Jewell" follows the story of the titular character, a security guard who was initially hailed as a hero but then suspected of planting a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Jewell was later exonerated. The movie depicts Scruggs, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reporter, offering sex for confidential information from an FBI source about the case.

CBS put Richard Jewell in a bad light and accused him of a terrorist bombing.

FUCBS.

“...it’s hard for me to get excited about a movie when I know ahead of time exactly how it will play out.”

I find that to be one very odd comment.

No. I saw it. It was good.

If the left hates it, you should go see it.

It was a good movie. Timely too, with the dishonesty of the FBI and media.

I saw the movie ... and after reading Deep state target Padopolus book - good movie go see it.
1-FBI cannot be trusted, do not talk to them w/o a lawyer. The will manufacture evidence to make a story if they have to. The FBI was evil taking advantage of a guy who didn’t know any better.

2-Media cannot be trusted, they want their Lois Lane Scoop. The movie did not depict the woman as a total whore, but rather would resort to any tactic to get the story

3-Even when the new he was innocent, they still pursued the case and story

4-Thank God Jewell had the sense to call a guy he knew from work a number of years ago, as he was a lawyer and Jewell was offered a book deal. He would still be in jail today if he hadn’t

I was a very bad history student. So all of those movies had surprise endings for me. 🙂

CBS can’t say what’s really on their minds, this movie puts the FBI in a bad light at a time that the FBI is being challenged in the “Russiagate” criminal conspiracy coup.

The FBI attempted to railroad a completely innocent man in the Atlanta Olympic bombing.

The problem is, going to the cinema, even if you don’t pay for the concessions, is still an expensive proposition, especially for a movie that doesn’t rely on special effects, and is probably better being watched at home.

I imagine when it’s available for streaming more people will see it that way.

It is a GREAT movie......
....the liberal MSM and Hollywood does not want you to see Eastwood’s hard hitting, truthful masterpiece!

It really is a ‘must see’

"Richard Jewell" follows the story of the titular character, a security guard who was initially hailed as a hero but then suspected of planting a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Jewell was later exonerated.

Oddly, this fits the Shakespearean definition of a comedy, where things get worse and worse for the main character until the middle of Act III, then improve towards the end.

In contrast, in a Shakespearean tragedy, the fortunes of the main character improve for a while, but climax and turn down in Act III until the end. Think of Brutus in "Julius Caesar."

Richard Jewell is a modern tragedy, nevertheless.

The AJC can whine all they want, but there are plenty of similar examples out there, one quite current. Does anyone think Ali Watkins wasn’t getting tips for tips from James Wolfe, who was head of security for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence? And who was 30 years her senior, more than old enough to be her father?

This wasn’t an isolated case of the FIB trying to convict an innocent man in a big case.

Recall that there were several unrelated suspects in the American anthrax attacks case. And even late in the game they were flip flopping with absolute certainty that it was this one OR that one.

Mrs. Freeman and I saw, and loved, the movie as well.

It was a story that needed to be told when it happened.

Unfortunately, the FBI was not challenged and continued to devolve into the Deep (Police) State.

I suspect Clint created it as a PSA.

When the DVD hits, the movie will be a glowing success. His audience no longer goes to see movies on the big screen. They prefer to watch the movie in the comfort of their own home, without the nonsense that is so prevalent in movie theaters anymore.

Plan to see this movie in the next few days. Being retired my preference is to go to the cinema mid-week and see the early afternoon showing … many times there are only a dozen or so people in attendance.

Good movie. When the FBI walked in and saw his “arsenal” laid out on his bed, I said to my wife “I’ve got a lot more than that”. Guy next to me laughed out loud and said “In my truck!”.

Jimmy,

NEVER talk to the POLICE EVER without a lawyer.

Especially small town cops.
