dividing a nation’s “human development” score, obtained by looking at statistics on life expectancy, health and education,

Life expectancy can be skewed if a country lies about infant mortality. The US counts infant deaths from the first breath, some countries only count babies alive after six months. I imagine Cuba is in that group.

Health? Yeah, Cuba thrives on medical tourism. Anyone with a serious disease goes to Cuba for treatment.

Education. Cuba claims 100% literacy—that’s how good their schools are. It is one reason why students from around the world go to Cuban universities and why Cuba is a world leader in science, math, engineering and the arts.

What a load of crap.

no doubt the Norks beat Cuba on the denominator part of the ratio, but their failure on the numerator part does them in ...

The less carbon footprint the better, then. Indian tribes in the Amazon Basin living in prehistoric conditions must be the most advanced civilization on the planet, therefore. Up is also down.

Two acres and a mule, what more do you need?

Except that the Party took the land back and Che shot the mule just for the fun of it.

Well, when you have nothing it is easy to sustain.

Well, DUH!

It’s easy to have a low carbon footprint when the climate is warm enough that you don’t have to heat your house most of the year, and where cars are not available or very limited.

Putting “Cuba” and “Developed Nation” in the same sentence? That’s either incredibly daring or incredibly delusional. :P

Not really. There is certain charm to it but I wouldn’t want to live there. Far from worst place though.

<< The Sustainable Development Index (SDI), designed by anthropologist and author Dr Jason Hickel >>

From this article in the Washington Examiner: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/the-far-left-has-an-idiotic-new-craze-reduce-economic-growth

Enter Dr. Jason Hickel of the London School of Economics, a man on a crusade to end “the tyranny of GDP.”

In an interview for BBC’s Newsnight show on Thursday, Hickel called for “degrowth.” Ignoring energy innovation in fracking, nuclear power, renewables, and battery-based power systems, Hickel claimed that Earth is running out of resources. Rich nations are apparently to blame because we “use three times our fair share of bio-capacity.”

Health? Yeah, Cuba thrives on medical tourism. Anyone with a serious disease goes to Cuba for treatment.

Meanwhile, Cuban citizens have to bring their own light bulbs and linens to the hospital.

I somehow agree that GDP-tied development indexes are flawed but ‘bio-capacity’ sounds even less appealing.

I knew a guy that was born and raised in Cuba. He sure did love the USA. He used to tell me stories about the economy and oppression in Cuba. Two things he said were he wore the same pair of pants for a year and that a bottle of shampoo was a luxury.
