I grew up just outside of Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring TX. This was a training base then and it was common to hear sonic booms. It just dawned on me that we have people now who’ve never heard a sonic boom.

We only had evaporate coolers then so you had to sleep with a window open to keep the air flowing. On the west end of the runway they worked on the engines and you could hear them firing up at night. People come visit and complain of the noise, I slept like a baby. There was always a couple of planes up in the air flying the pattern. You could tell how the class was advancing by the planes in the air. They started them on T-37’s and finished them on T-38’s. We just went about our business like they wasn’t even there. About once or twice a month they’s open the hanger on the nth west side and bring out the F-104’s. Those jet’s would make you look up. loved watching them. When I got to Vietnam I got to witness first hand what the 104’s and 105’s were really built for. First time I heard a gattling gun (20mm Vulcan) fire off was in the A Shau, when 4 F-104’s lit up a hillside we were thumping with our 155’s. The sound was incredible even from miles away.

It was headed towards Stead, so I assumed that was it. Wiki says no T-38s are stationed in Nevada. Maybe it escaped Area 51?

China Lake isn’t all that far from Vegas. Nellis is right there of course. Wouldn’t surprise me if one or two didn’t operate from either place from time to time as aggressors or test beds.
