Officials representing the EU on diplomatic and foreign affairs tell local politicians Hong Kong can count on the EU hours after President Trump signed the act allowing sanctions against the citys government.
Hong Kong can rely on the support of the European Union in troubled times, a visiting EU delegation to the city said on Thursday, after talks with local politicians.
True friends stand by each other at difficult times, and Hong Kong can count on the EU in this regard, Gunnar Wiegand, managing director for Asia and the Pacific at the European External Action Service (EEAS) said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
The team from the EEAS, which represents the EU on diplomatic and foreign affairs, was visiting Hong Kong for their annual structured dialogue, which the EU said earlier was intended to promote even closer EU-Hong Kong cooperation.
During their talks, the two sides exchanged views on various matters of mutual interest, including [the] latest developments, the statement said.
The visit came amid the long-running protests in Hong Kong and after repeated statements from Brussels on the citys need to uphold the rule of law and maintain its autonomy.
During the recent siege of Polytechnic University, the EEAS said that the actions of Hong Kongs police must remain strictly appropriate, while fundamental freedoms, including the right of peaceful assembly of Hongkongers, must be upheld.
In July, the European Parliament passed a resolution denouncing violence by police officers against the protesters. It also called on the EEAS to raise all these concerns and to ensure a dialogue in its interactions with governments in Beijing and Hong Kong.

From the article:
Chinas foreign ministry said Trumps signing of the democracy act severely infringed on Hong Kong affairs, seriously interfered in Chinas internal politics, and gravely violated international laws and the basic principles of international relations.
So, Europe is also interfering in China’s internal affairs?
What does China want the west to do? Simply ignore what’s happening?
This situation is volatile because of all of the variables.
The violent “protesters” could be China sympathizers.
Some years back when there were protests, it was found out that the violent “protesters” were from the TRIAD, at least in part.
It never made sense, the protesters turning violent. Now it does.
I wish the real protesters the best.
And I hope the numbers dead in Iran among those fighting against ANOTHER tyranny doesn’t get too high.
trust the EU? Well don’t.
Why would the EU support freedom? Have they forgotten about globalism totally? This is obviously a mistake!
The EU will bravely fight until the last US soldier.
Exactly what DJT did.
The EU will become very angry if China commits any human rights abuses in Hong Kong. They will even write a letter, saying how angry they are.

The EU might even go a step further, and increase Chinas carbon reduction goals. China would of course comply, and the entire Chinese economy would collapse.
Mess with the EU at your own peril!
Oh crap. Im rolling on the floor laughing. Oh mercy. Are they going to resurrect Neville Chamberlain? How European.
What are they going to do, send them old cheese?
If these EU pussies truly meant that, they'd say, "China, stop it now or we will embargo all chinese products to the EU".
With the US tariffs this embargo would kill the chinks economy.
The EU is all talk, no action, so they say, " We support you", and then go and celebrate Christmas or whatever the hell they call it over there.
The chinese know that the EU officials are full of sheep shit.
What a comfort that must be to them.
Of course it is all talk. They support the commies’ tyranny all the way. They strive to be them.
