You may not have noticed, but movies no longer open on Fridays; almost all major releases begin their runs in theaters with a 7 p.m. showing on Thursday. (Until the late 1970s, by the way, most movies opened on Wednesdays, for no good reason other than that they had always opened on Wednesdays.) This meant that Sony Pictures knew by the time midnight rolled around on November 14, only five hours after its first showings, that they had a monumental turkey on their hands with the new version of Charlies Angels.
Nobody went to see it on Thursday night, and by Sunday, it had earned only $8 millionby far the worst performance of a major studio release this year. Nineteen years ago, the first cinematic version of Charlie's Angels with Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz grossed $40 million in its first weekenda value of $60 million today. So basically this new Angels earned one-sixth what its predecessor did.
As it happens, Charlie's Angels is a dull, charmless, witless, and nonsensical piece of workbut moviegoers couldn't have known that without seeing it first. And since when has a movie being lousy been the reason audiences would reject it? In this case, word of mouth didn't keep them away; the very idea of the movie kept them away. Why was the American audience allergic to Charlies Angels?

My schadenfreude over this film's tanking just does not stop.
The movie sucks, Jim.
I’m not into reboots of the crappy shows of the 70’s, but I would definitely Laz the heck out of the statuesque amazon in the middle.
Could also be that people are sick of reboots. Most are just crap.
Why was the American audience allergic to Charlies Angels?
Um, let me guess, because it sucked? I can only guess as I have not read the article, nor more importantly, seen the movie. Both of those realities will most likely remain that way. 8>)
As bad as the new Magnum.........

Thats how I remembered it. Glad to see Im not getting senile. Not as fast anyway.
Each of those chicks could easily take on a 160 lb 6 foot 2 inch bad guy with hardly breaking a nail....

I’m from the 70’s. These shows were quite cool at the time.
The purpose of these reboots is simply to change them and add the current requirements of fags, lesbos and other cultural garbage of the day.
Yep, I hear you about reboots.
I think the powers that be in Hollywood, think that a reboot/remake/sequel of popular movies and TV shows, have a built in “fan base”, so that any new movies in the series should do well.
That reasoning worked well for James Bond for decades.
Does it still work for the Star Wars movies?
In any event, it is not automatic that remakes and reboots will do well. Hollywood may learn that lesson.
This reminds me of the talk in recent years, that Hollywood has no imagination, no new storylines, which has turned us off from many movies and TV shows.
I would sometimes watch the early ones on TV simply because there was always 3 beautiful hot girls.
I recall a TV critic once mentioning that they were always beating up middle aged men for some reason. I guess now they are doing that to all kinds of men.
Hopefully, several careers were ruined by this disaster.
Good point.
Old movies and TV shows were fine at the time, reflect the times when they were made.
Trying to make them “politically correct” with gay characters and such, can ruin it for a lot of people.
I was going to call BS until I looked up that it was a 2000 release.
I feel as confused about the pace of time as the time I learned that Cleopatra lived closer to the moon landing than the building of the Great Pyramid.
Beating up middle aged men??
I never really watched the original TV series, but weren’t they private detectives, and the bad guys they were after tended to be middle aged men???
Gee, just look at that diverse cast
Werent Charlies Angels all white girls? Bosley? I am outraged. this is an appropriation of white culture
Besides what male in his right mind would take a date to a male bashing movie?
Fools
Yesterday I watched a youtube vid of the tv version. The characters pictured in post #1 would probably be typical villains in the old series.
Isn’t that Milo? (the blond on the left)

What really blew my mind was when I was a kid, watching black and white world war 2 clips, I thought that was in another world eleventy billion years ago impossibly ancient from an incomprehensible culture. Then one day I realized it was only 20 years before I was born. Like thinking back to Y2k, though those were better times before we were infected with moronials
