CDC says teen vaping surges to more than 1 in 4 high school students

More than one in four high school students in the U.S. use e-cigarettes, as teen vaping rates surged to yet another record despite efforts to control the epidemic, according to new federal data.

Among high school students, 27.5% reported using an e-cigarette in the previous 30 days, up from 20.8% in 2018, according to preliminary results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s annual National Youth Tobacco Survey. Fruit, menthol and mint flavors were by far the most popular flavors, with more than 60% of teens who vaped saying they used them.

The rapid rise in teen e-cigarette use — up from 11.7% in 2017 — and an outbreak of a mysterious lung disease tied to vaping have jolted federal officials into action. The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it will soon pull flavored e-cigarettes off the market, at least until it can review their safety.

First lady Melania Trump tweeted the latest CDC data, released late Wednesday, saying “it’s our responsibility as parents to understand the dangers that come from vaping. Our Administration supports the removal of flavored e-cigarettes from stores until they’re approved by @US_FDA.”

Public health advocates say e-cigarettes have erased years of progress in reducing smoking rates among minors and is getting a new generation addicted to nicotine. They blame market leader Juul, which is partially owned by tobacco giant Altria, for making vaping trendy among young people who view smoking as unfashionable. While vaping rates among high school students hit a new high, teen smoking hit a new low of 5.8%.

Juul makes sleek devices that are easy to use and to hide. Its nicotine pods are available in flavors many say are too appealing to kids, such as mango and mint. They pack a powerful punch, with one pod containing as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes.

The FDA has embraced e-cigarettes as a less harmful way for smokers to satisfy their nicotine addiction than smoking cigarettes. Skyrocketing numbers of minors started using the products, forcing the FDA to reverse course last year.

“If we find that children start surging into tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes or if we find marketing practices that target children and try to attract them into tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes, we will engage in enforcement actions there also,” he told reporters.

E-cigarettes are generally thought to be less harmful than traditional cigarettes. However, the long-term health risks are unknown. An outbreak of a mysterious lung disease linked to vaping has heightened scrutiny.

The CDC is investigating more than 450 cases of lung disease that health officials suspect were caused by vaping.

Fruit, mint and menthol flavors are the most commonly used.

A flavor ban is coming.

THANK YOU Melania.

The industry needs to come out with a vape juice made out of “plants”. The left will love it.

There have been fruit flavored vape juices since the beginning. Odd that it’s all coming to a head now a decade or so after the fact.

It is a flavored pacifier. The industry knew what vaping would become.

The left wants to ban vaping because it resembles cigarette smoking. But they refuse to ban cigarettes! Wondering why.

By in large, I believe the people getting sick from vaping are using tainted liquids and liquids with oils in them. Really a black market issue more than a vaping issue per se’.

That said, nicotine is nicotine. Still going to clog your coronary arteries eventually.

It has nothing to do with health and safety. If they cared about that, they’d ban regular cigarettes.
It’s about precious revenue going to their gods of government.

The idiots add marijuana oils and other drugs into the mixtures and destroy their lungs. People are dying terrible respiratory deaths. The drug epidemic in America is doing what the widespread use of gin did to England in the 17th and 18th centuries. It culled the herd of those who for whatever reason made bad choices. History repeats.

OMG! They'll never know what it's like to be addicted to cigarettes for 3 or more decades now!

If only vapes tasted as nasty as cigarettes they wouldn't want to vape either.

Can we have a war on vaping, without a war on smoking, or will BT shut it down and keep their slave population growing?

When it comes to just nicotine I don't see what the big deal is with “vaping”. Yes,there are other things that are “vaped” but I don't see nicotine as being any worse than caffeine. It's things *other* than nicotine that make cigarettes so dangerous.

But, but, but....it's illegal for kids to buy these things.

Banning then will simply cause a lot of bootleg e-liquids, many with dangerous additives, to be introduced to the market.

And where the outcry about flavored booze? That sickly sweet stuff that a lot of kids drink because they can't handle the real thing? I promise you booze is a much bigger problem than nicotine. Nicotine might get you addicted but it won't turn you into a drunk.

Finally we are either a free people or we aren't. I guess we aren't and we might as well just give us the illusion that we are.

Oh, and I searched my memory carefully and don't remember ever having an opportunity to vote for anyone named Melania. Like all the recent first ladies, some of whom might be very nice people, they need to keep their nose out of my business. If they want to do something "for the chillen" they might spend their time educating the youth of America about the roots of our freedom.

When I was a teen in Jr.HS/Sr.HS years (~1955-60), I will guess that about 40% of the girls and 80% of the boys smoked real cigarettes. Most began smoking around 13-14 y/o.

I suppose vaping would have added more girls.
