Travel far enough in the universe and you could end up back where you began. Measurements from the Planck space observatory have shown that the universe might be shaped like a sphere rather than a flat sheet, which would change nearly everything we think we know about the cosmos.
The Planck observatory, which operated from 2009 to 2013, mapped the cosmic microwave background, a sea of light left over from the big bang.
One set of observations showed that there was more gravitational lensing stretching of the light due to the shape of space-time, which can be distorted by heavy matter than expected. Alessandro Melchiorri at the Sapienza University of Rome and his colleagues calculated that this could be because the shape of the universe is different from what we thought.
All other cosmological data suggests the universe is flat, meaning it has no curvature, similar to a sheet of paper. These Planck measurements indicate that it could be closed, or spherical, which would mean that if you travelled far enough in one direction, you would end up back where you started. That is because the extra lensing implies the presence of extra dark matter, which would pull the universe into a finite sphere instead of a flat sheet.
According to these observations, the universe is 41 times more likely to be closed than flat. This is the most precise cosmological data and it is giving us a different picture, says Melchiorri.

Why not Spherical or the 4D equivalent?
As though that makes any difference at all.
so \o/ PANIC ?

I just packed enough food or three days..when I get back i’ll let you know if they were right or not...
It appears to be shaped sort of like a turtle. With another turtle underneath. And another...
Round or Flat implies a 3 dimensional reality. Most of us humans are limited to a 3 or 4 dimension reality. It is very possible that the dimensions of the universe are many more than 3 or 4. The problem is with our limited brains and our cultural biases.
I like a big, round universe, I cannot lie.
The Holocaust didn’t happen.
We just can't see it from our perspective.
Nor can we see the looming danger.
I can’t wrap my mind around these concepts about the shape of the universe. The way I perceive things, a shape is a function of form. How does one have form within a void?
Turtle turtle...
Fractally speaking...

That pretty much sums up my feelings as well. Its a curiosity not worth spending any money on. But Im sure people have gotten grants to study even more unimportant things.
Of course panic, haven’t you been paying attention? When in doubt, panic.
How does one have form within a void?
Well, that depends upon whether its being observed...
Even as a layman I am very confident that the universe is spherical because at smaller scales all explosions radiate out in all directions if there are no impediments in the way like walls, floors, etc.
Who knows, ‘dark matter’ may be the remnants of an older universe where matter has decayed to just mass and our universe came to being within it. Also, there could have been other big bangs within our own universe that we cannot see because the light/radiation hasn’t reached us yet.
Actually, I always thought this was the case? Who claimed it was flat? If the big bang is true, how could it be a shaped charge explosion with nothing to shape this explosion? It would have to be like all other unrestricted explosions and go in all directions wouldn’t it?
This changes everything. Maybe Epstein did kill himself? meh
