Klobuchar, Booker rule out recusing themselves from Trump impeachment trial

Senate Democrats who are running for the party’s 2020 nomination are ruling out recusing themselves from participating in any Senate impeachment trial of President Trump, even amid questions from Republicans that it could represent a conflict of interest.

“No, I would not recuse myself. It's part of my constitutional obligation,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., told reporters Friday when asked.

The question of recusal was raised by Rep. Thomas Masie, R-Ky., who asked if senators running for president “have a conflict of interest regarding possible impeachment of an opponent.”

Thomas Massie wrote:

"Don’t senators running for POTUS have a conflict of interest regarding possible impeachment of an opponent?

"Shouldn’t they recuse themselves if it came to the Senate?

"Wouldn’t anyone so positioned against a defendant be barred from serving as a judge or jury in a court of law?"

Booker was asked on Friday if he would ever recuse himself, and he gave a short, simple answer: “No.”

In her answer, Klobuchar went into greater detail.

“I was elected as a U.S. senator for the state of Minnesota and my job will be to be a juror in the case and...I very strongly believe that this impeachment proceeding must go forward,” she said. “I don't know what counts that the House will come up with and what they will bring over to us but my job will be to look at the evidence and make a decision.”

Other senators have not addressed the question directly, but have not given any sign that they would recuse themselves. On Wednesday, Harris sent a letter with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., to every Trump cabinet official demanding they cooperate with ongoing investigations and preserve relevent evidence.

They don’t seem to mind interfering with an election at all.

Would Spartacus recuse himself? I think not.

Imagine a DA up for a circuit court election working a case where the defendant is the judge they are running against.

Ethics rules don’t apply to Democrats. That’s literally true.

Then what’s the difference between Trump allegedly asking Ukraine to investigate Biden & Son and Booker/Harris who have dual roles such as investigators and judges of an impeachment hearing using that information to potentially run against Trump?

See how this works? They also don’t have to give up their elected offices to run for president either.

Conflicts of interest are for everyone except Democrats.

100 % true.

The same goes for phony Lt Colonels who try to bring dirt against President Trump. You absolutely cannot question their integrity or motives.

IF and when there is a trial in the Senate, both of these clowns will have already dropped out of the Dem. Pres. race.

Amy says she doesn’t know “what counts [impeachment] the House will come up with”. She sounds like she’s admitting it’s being contrived. LOL!

“It’s part of my constitutional obligation,”

That clown would fail a 1950 era grade school constitution quiz.

Congresscritter is now a noun and a definition.

Rats never recuse, Rats never resign. I think both of these scumbags were among those that demanded Barr recuse himself.

WTP need a new rule. We can call it ‘Forced Recusal’. If a current office holder wishes to run for another office, they must first resign their current position before their name can appear on another ballot. Why should we allow someone vying for the Office of President to be able to vote for impeachment of the current holder of that Office? Does that not present a built in bias?

Corey Booker will recuse himself, but then I. M. Spartacus (a.k.a. “T-Bone”) will cast a vote in his place.
