School apps track students from the classroom to bathroom, and parents are [tr]

When Christian Chase wants to take a bathroom break at his high school, he can't just raise his hand.

Instead, the 17-year-old senior makes a special request on his school-issued Chromebook computer. A teacher approves it pending any red flags in the system, such as another student he should avoid out in the hall at the same time, then logs him back in on his return. If he were out of class for more than a set amount of time, the application would summon an administrator to check on him.

Heritage High School in Loudoun County, Virginia, introduced the software, called e-Hallpass, in September as a way to track trips to the bathroom, the nurse's office, the principal or other places on campus. It collects the data for each student's comings and goings so approved administrators can see pass histories or look for patterns.

I think the only difference is you don’t get shot if you return too late.

Reason 456,093 to homeschool

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Surveillance of little things now, surveillance of big things later. Once the power is in their hands, they cannot resist expanding it.

Software is impersonal and has no idea what’s happening. It just records specific data points and some program determines if a human needs to be called.

Ditch the software and use humans instead.

The next phase of ‘big brother training’ for these kids.

Another reason to home school.

And the difference between public school and jail is what again?

The line just got a whole lot blurrier.

My psychotic/schizophrenic stepdaughters number 1 ploy in school was telling the teacher she had to use the restroom. Then she’d wander the hallways breaking into lockers that she had scouted out earlier. Of course she always got caught and they would bring us in to watch the video.

We told the schools not to allow her out of the classroom and this was part of her psychosis, but they continued to enable her.

So I would want this app, but I’m not saying as a bkanket school policy.

Not going to happen. That would be a step towards holding them accountable. Nice dream though...

Some creepy pedo will get hold of this app and start monitoring the children. Probably a teacher. Just wait, bound to happen.

This is not the worst idea in the world.

Old system: A student wants to leave class for whatever reason. That reason might be a very good one. Or maybe the student just feels like leaving class to walk around the halls for awhile.

Regardless, the teacher must stop teaching, and write a hall pass. And in some cases, the teacher must first question the student. “Why do you need to see the nurse right now?”

All this interrupts the flow of the instruction, and takes time away from learning. That time is lost forever. So yes, a computerized approach might be a good idea.

In the big city schools this app ought to include shock collars on every student. Gone too long and it starts shocking in increasing degrees right up to FRY.

Given the situation we find our daughter in, I can see the merits as well as the pitfalls to this.
