Californians struggle after latest blackout hits 1.5 million

That fire was caused when a dry branch from a eucalyptus tree was flung 30 feet (9 meters) by high winds into a city Department of Water and Power line, which short-circuited and sparked, the utility and Fire Department announced Tuesday.

The power line had been operating safely and the DWP had cut away brush and trees from around the line, officials said.

Mayor Eric Garcetti called it an “act of God.”

It’s not just the state. Individual property owners play a large part also. When the clearing crews show up to clear a line a lot of property owners throw a fit. Allow only minimal trimming and so on.

actually clearing of brush is managed pretty stringently here in L A . our problems - building in canyons, dry weather conditions, high winds - should not be confused with the PG&E situation up north. perhaps the powers that be can speak to why they denied PG&E rate increase a few years back, $ intended for maintenance, while pushing them to go more into solar etc. the green investments did not keep the lights on.

Except they don’t have that every place else. I’m in NYS....and there is no clear cutting along the monstrous transmission poles that traverse the state. In our neighborhood, they trim trees to keep them away from the power lines.

Water, and energy shortages maybe because millions of illegals are using them.

Yep.

And the Democrat voters in Cartelfornia can't see it.

Who would elect a.mayor who declares a fire an act of god so now your homeowners insurance won’t pay for your burnt house?

{{{sniff-sniff}}}

LeBron James had to drive around with his family for 15 minutes, while looking for a hotel that would take them in.....these fires are also very inconvenient. I feel so bad for him.

And reap the whirlwind.
The stalk has no bud;
It shall never produce meal.
If it should produce,
Aliens would swallow it up.

Am contemplating a theory:

“Green New Deal” types are orchestrating the demise of PG&E to persuade people to “go green” individually.
Hence the judge holding PG&E liable for last year’s damages, alongside legislators refusing to allow/compel PG&E to mitigate the power line risks.
To wit: exacerbate bad fire conditions, hold PG&E accountable unto bankruptcy, mass blackouts motivated by politics (not breakage) ensue, people panic and turn to home solar/wind, fossil-fuel utilities collapse.

More conspiratorial than I like, yet plausible (given that GND types actually believe their rhetoric).

re: “can’t power lines go underground? “

You’re the problem right there ... all we need are more ‘layman’ asking questions the professional power engineers ALREADY have the answer to ...

Underground utilities are very expensive to build—and California has gone third world—which means they will be broke—forever.

They don’t clearcut around the very tall ones as it’s not necessary, but around the lower ones that trees and brush mess with.

They’re also not allowed to trim trees or brush around neighborhood lines - so the lines get overgrown.

“Who would elect a.mayor who declares a fire an act of god so now your homeowners insurance won’t pay for your burnt house?”

Green Democrats who want to destroy the fossil-fuel based power system and drive humans out for environmental reclamation purposes.

And anyone who financially benefits from green energy systems, abandoned land, or displaced populations.
