One Navy officer who came onshore couldn’t communicate with his ship so he used his calling card to call the Pentagon from a payphone(remember them?)and had them radio the information. Next there were the TOURIST MAPS to find their way around. Last don’t forget the film of the ‘rescued’ medical student kissing the ground. All this happened 5 days AFTER the marines were bombed in Beruit.
Beiruit. One of the wounded soldiers died on his flight to hospital at Ramstein AB in Germany. He could have been taken to one in Israel where we give billions in military aid. Standard barricades to block the path of a suicide bomber were not used. Advice was not wanted. Even using vehicles so that a winding path to the hotel/barracks would slow down a vehicle packed with explosives were not used. All the marines were cooped up in one spot. Go figure.
Thanks for the info. There are lots that went on that the public have no idea really happened..
I always wondered whether our speedy success in GWI was in part the result of lessons learned from Grenada.
And I remember clearly how outraged I was that we sent our wounded to Germany rather than Israel. I loved Reagan, but just damn that Baker was an Arabist creep.
