Striking Chicago teachers who are seeking smaller class sizes and higher pay also are demanding that the nation’s third-largest city do more to lower housing costs and put more resources into helping homeless students.

The demand for affordable housing citywide — for students and their financially-strapped families as well as for school employees — stands as a dramatic example of organized labor’s effort to expand bargaining beyond bread-and-butter issues.

So, they want the state to pay for their lodging? There must be some WWII Quansit huts in a warehouse somewhere.

If all of the illegal immigrants suddenly left Chicago, it would make LOTS of affordable housing available, as well as reduce class sizes and need for more resources in the public schools.

But Chicago (as is common in liberal cities) chooses to provide for the illegals, on the backs of the actual taxpayers. At some point, there will only be a few actual taxpayers left to carry the load.

There is plenty of affordable housing in Chicago in certain neighborhoods—and the gun shot sound-effects are free!

Among the U.S.’ 50 largest school districts, CPS teachers’ pay ranks No. 1 for teachers with a bachelor’s degree and five years’ experience, No. 2 for first-year teachers with a bachelor’s degree, and No. 3 for first-year teachers with a master’s degree.

How about “free cellphones and free internet” ?

In addition to their 100K job, part time, and pension so why not also include a free car, probably a BMW, unless working in the inner city wherein they need a hummer or tank.

They just want something in there that makes them look less greedy. The reality is the school system is bankrupt and the teachers don’t care they want more. Young teachers are paying for older ones and retirees who are all millionaires.

Can I ask a stupid question? How does a school district provide so called affordable housing for everyone, teachers, students, and their families?

I can see where somehow they subsidized teacher housing, but for students and their families too? Would anyone with a chind in public school then get subsidized housing?

...seeking smaller class sizes and higher pay...

Seeking to do less, at a higher cost = government efficiency.

The big difference here in 2.) NH is that we do not pay income tax OR sales tax. Only rooms and meals tax of 8%.
