Yep, the timing is DEAD-ON. Remember that Obama was promising a ‘reset’ (i.e., becoming friendlier) just before that (in late 2012).
If you look at what changed in those 16 months or so, you’ll see that Russia took back Crimea (which was 90% ethnic Russian to begin with and should have never been given to the Ukraine in the first place) and that Russia supported Russian nationals in Eastern Ukraine, trying to rid themselves of the Biden-imposed tyrant in Kiev. Doing the first was simply a non-issue...virtually everyone in Crimea wanted to return to Russia, doing the second was debatable, but not worth flipping our relationship over, especially given our history of sticking our noses into other countries and Russia’s ability to wipe us off the planet.
But the BIG CHANGE was, at the same time, Russia said that, while being gay is fine, kids should be LEFT ALONE to grow up in a normal environment - that was simply NOT ACCEPTABLE to the Democrats and thus Russia had to become our ‘convenient’ enemy.
In the reversed universe, the Demmorist-Left has become Joe McCarthy.

If McMullin had carried Utah, that could have resulted in neither major candidate getting 270 votes, in which case the House of Representatives would have chosen between Trump, Hillary, and McMullin...with each state having one vote.
By my calculations, Trump would have had the votes of 32 states, Hillary of 17, with one state (Maine) evenly divided.
That's assuming that the Congressmen from Utah did not vote for McMullin and that no Republican Congressmen changed their vote because they were being blackmailed.
