Senate Dem to offer bill making threats, attacks against news media a federal crime
The Hill ^ | 10/15/19 | Tal Axelrod

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said Tuesday he plans to introduce legislation that would make threats and attacks against news organizations a federal crime.

“What we have to address is the continuing threat of physical violence, whether by guns or other means, against the press that may intimidate them in their vital newsgathering operation,” Blumenthal said at a press conference.

“It is a priority for me to protect newsgathering operations no matter what their form and the act that we’re proposing would in fact establish a federal crime when someone threatens or attacks anyone doing f act-gathering or news operations. That is the purpose of this bill.”

Yeah. I thought that one was double jeopardy, as far as I’m concerned. But who am I?

You seem to have a different opinion than my side on the definition of Threat.

I threaten to find something that’ll get them arrested for treason or sued for libel or to release some true but evil thing they may have done? Is that the threat you speak against the 5th (columnist) estate Bloomie?

Not to mention the free speech problems. So criticizing the Democrat media would now become a crime?

Democrats are no longer champions of our First Amendment.

“Does that mean we would be able to Issue/ grant/ qualify and or revoke a “jounalist license?”

Absolutely - this is a Progressive’s wet-dream - to be able to license and regulate journalism. Of course anyone who dares to promulgate “Misinformation” or “Fake News” will immediately lose their privileges.

Only licensed and “trusted” sources should be able to disseminate information, it’s just too important to leave in the hands of the common rabble.

No problem. Senator Vietnam will set up an agency to license them. He will appoint a Lois Lerner clone to decide who gets licensed.

Good Point. Pass this only in exchange for a right to sue the media for damages just like they were ordinary citizens?

I thought threats and attacks were already illegal.

Perhaps Dick Blomenthal thinks attacks can mean criticisms.

It’s funny how socialists/communist originated with the intent to create a classless society.

This is childish and divorced from reality.

Does this apply to FOX News, OAN, Project Veritas, and Brietbart?

Orwellian.

North Korea, Russia, Cuba, and most African hellholes have those kinds of laws... it's fitting that democrats would want them here.

Blumenthal — Without a doubt the most ignorant person in the senate — and that’s saying something!

Senate Dem to offer bill making threats, attacks against news media a federal crime

Republicans should amend one word in the bill and rush it to President Trump for his signature:

The media already consider themselves a protected class, superior in every way to the poor schmucks in their audience. This would only formalize that. “Equal protection”? Not so much.
