~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Clear Air Force Station, Alaska

AKclear1

Clear Air Force Station is a United States Air Force Station radar station for detecting incoming ICBMs and submarine-launched ballistic missiles to NORAD's command center and to provide Space Surveillance data to Air Force Space Command's Space Control Center (SCC).

Clear's AN/FPS-123 Upgraded Early Warning Radar is part of the Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) which also includes those at Beale AFB, Cape Cod AFS, RAF Fylingdales and Thule Site J. The "historic property" was one of the Alaska World War II Army Airfields and later a Cold War BMEWS site providing NORAD data to Colorado's BMEWS Central Computer and Display Facility (CC&DF).

In addition to the "original camp area" with buildings still in use today, areas of the station include the airfield, the "SSPARS Site" the technical site (Utilador, BMEWS reflectors, support buildings, power plant), and the composite site (two permanent dormitories, a mess hall, recreation area, and administrative area). In addition to the Air National Guard unit, Clear has active duty USAF, Royal Canadian Air Force, civilian, and contractor personnel.

The USAF plans to upgrade the Early Warning Radar (EWR) and associated facilities at the SSPARS at Clear AFS by 2016. In September 2012, Raytheon was awarded a $125.3m contract by MDA and USAF to upgrade the EWR system. The upgraded EWR (UEWR) will be equipped with a new capability to effectively work along with other elements of the MDA’s Ballistic Missile Defence System (BMDS)

I can see the mountains when watching it. The cam rotates, so it turns in almost all directions, and if there is something going on, it will focus on that. Watched a large jet take off this afternoon when it was still light. It’s a busy place, what with the major airlines and the little pontoon planes that take off from the water there.

Looks like you have a lovely view of the mountains from your house. That has to be so cool! [and cold in the winter. LOL]

Sorry...didn’t see this earlier. We didn’t get any rain. Darn it! It was cloudy for a lot of the day, but that’s all. Kept it from getting as warm as they predicted, though, and that’s a good thing.

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?

Darn the luck. I’d hoped for rain in your area. At least it wasn’t hot.

We have clouds now from the system rolling across south of us and we’re supposed to be warmer and more humid tomorrow. The 10:00 weather forecast gives us more hope for a decent rainfall late tomorrow night and we pray they’re right. We’re hurtin’.

Campion Air Force Station (AAC ID: F-08) is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located 6.4 miles (10.3 km) east-southeast of Galena, Alaska.

The Aircraft Control and Warning station was closed on 1 November 1983, and the site was re-designated as a Long Range Radar (LRR) Station. It remains active as part of the Alaska NORAD Region.

Yesterday was a little more calm than yesterday. We walked the beach and the tall grass area.

We have a cold front coming in later today. It's supposed to cool off some. There's a level 1 risk for severe storms down in Southeast Oklahoma.

It sounds like you had a much nicer day. Nice and normal!

Your cold front will come through here tomorrow. Maybe a few thunder storms, which would please me immensely LOL, but we’ll be happy to just get some rain this time.
If your schedule is the same as ours, you’ll warm up again in two days.

I remember sitting down in the ICBM Launch Control Centers when they would test the Green Pine communications system. They would always poll Clear AFS as well as others around the world. When the stations replied the sound quality was so good you would think they were standing right next to you.
