Let's get out of here! Welsh independence calls SURGE after 'Brexit sledgehammer'
Daily Express ^ | 5 Oct 2019 | Emily Ferguson

WALES will soon get an independence vote, claims a Plaid Cymru MP, who argues Brexit is pushing the nation to break away from the UK.

Welsh MP Jonathan Edwards will try to rally support for a Welsh referendum today, as he speaks to delegates at the second day of Plaid Cymru's autumn conference. He is expected to say the Brexit referendum “drove a sledgehammer through the post-devolution period” and has caused a shift towards Welsh independence. The comments come after Plaid Cymru’s party leader, Adam Price, said he believed a referendum on Welsh independence would be held by 2030.

...The MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr will say: "I remember writing a university dissertation trying to explain the differences between the 1979 and 1997 Welsh referenda, and why Wales had gone from being overwhelmingly opposed to devolution to marginally voting in favour in the space of 18 years.

"The Brexit referendum drove a sledgehammer through the post-devolution period in Welsh history and now the stakes in the game have been raised considerably.

"On the one hand Wales as a political nation will be re-subsumed by Westminster. On the other hand, we can finish the job started by devolution and become a normal independent European country."

...Last month, a YouGov poll revealed support for breaking away from the UK is surging across Wales.

We live in interesting times. England out of the EU, while Scotland and Wales in the EU and Ireland reunited.

Is this the beginning of a Celtic renewal?

More likely the appearance of a set of dependency states in the EU. There are significant parts of Wales and Scotland where more than 60% of all economic activity is directly state generated, i.e., England is directly supporting these regions financially, Ulster, particularly Belfast has been living off the English teat since before the Second World War. If these units become independent they will need another source of cash infusions. For that the EU will be happy to provide in return for abject submission to Brussels. The statists leadership in these areas will be fine with that.

Some 700 years ago, old King Edward wasn’t exactly kind in bringing Wales into the Kingdom.

Belfast would then be part of united Ireland.

yes, it would be a relief to the English exchequer - it’s time for Westminster to cut the strings to NI and Scotland and Wales

What a load of crap. They must have done this poll in rural villages in North Wales to get a pro independence support of >20%. Theh know full well how dependent they are on the uk subsidies to stay afloat. Even to get from North Wales to Cardiff by rail or motorway requires you to go into England and changing at Crewe before going back into Wales. For someone who says Brexit will be a disaster for xyz reasons, you can capitalise them to XYZ reasons when it comes to leaving the UK, with the added fact that unlike the UK and the EU, the non English parts of the UK are heavily subsidised by London. The only part of the UK for which it would even begin to make sense to leave the UK is Northern Ireland because they are not as dependent on economic links with GB as the others are, but even then that would be frought with problems due to the fact the Republic would have to break it’s back economically to match public spending on the province, and they know it.

Dunno - but Plaid Cymru think it to be real enough for them to make noise about.

Remember - like Brexit - Welsh independence will be driven by the emotional need for Wales to be free of English domination.

Even then, nearly 60% of NI external trade is to GB and 14% to the republic. Brexit actually destroys the economic case for breaking the EU up. Had England stayed in the EU, it wouldn’t have mattered to cross border trade because they’d be in the same single market and customs union. With England outside the single market and customs union, staying in the UK makes far more economic sense. I can appreciate the nationalist argument that sovereignty trumps mere economics, but they should at least be honest and say that their case is about that and not about some kind of economic benefit, because it would cause far more economic pain than any worst case brexit scenario. I respect integrity of the nationalist case for fully sovereign Wales, Scotland etc outside the EU on a matter of principle, but the case for “independence” in order to get back into the EU is ludicrous from both an economic and political point of view.

Plaid Cymru are a deluded bunch of lefty prog nutcases, you’d have to be to be as out of touch with reality as to think Welsh independence (especially in order to get back into the EU) was a good idea. Do you ever wonder why people on the right and centre are far more likely to be pro-UK than people on the left are? They associate the British nation with racism and imperialism and welsh/scottish/irish nationalism as a way of painting themselves as part of a victim identity that is the bread and butter of modern leftism.

I am going to make a prediction here.

NI, and Scotland quit the UK and stay in the national socialist state of the EU.

England and Wales stay together and join in a joint union with the USA, Canada, Australia, and Maybe NZ.

Will take quiet a few years but that has been discussed at length some time ago with a Anglo-American union of sorts.

I think it was the Iron Lady who talked about it at one time.

Yeah, sure. They, along with England, voted for Brexit.

I know EU shills are salivating at any news that gives them hope that those that dared to defy that mighty Union will be punished.

Is this the beginning of a Celtic renewal?

Not if they're still under the EU's thumb.

It seems that Ireland is doing pretty well. Time for Brittany, Scotland and Wales to get independence as well from Paris and London
