Road Trip: Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska

Eielson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located approximately 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska and just southeast of Moose Creek, Alaska. It was established in 1943 as Mile 26 Satellite Field

Eielson Air Force Base host unit is the 354th Fighter Wing (354 FW) assigned to the Eleventh Air Force of the Pacific Air Forces.

The 354 FW's primary mission is to support Red Flag – Alaska, a series of Pacific Air Forces commander–directed field training exercises for U.S. Forces, joint offensive counter-air, interdiction, close-air support, and large force employment training in a simulated combat environment.

These exercises are conducted on the Joint Pacific Alaskan Range complex with air operations flown out of the two bases.

Eielson is projected to have fifty-four F-35's arriving in April 2020 and continuing through 2022. The planes will come with an estimated 3,500 personnel, to include Airmen and their families as well as civilian personnel.[7] The F-35 program will increase the number of military personnel at Eielson by about 50 percent.

The 354th Operations Group provides combat-ready forces, global air operations support, and realistic full-spectrum combat training for the joint force and international partners.

The 354th Operations Support Squadron provides combat forces, exercise and air-bridge support through a diverse array of specialties: intelligence, operations and scheduling, air traffic control, airfield management and weather observation/forecasting.

Shelter from the Storm

When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Exodus 33:22

As the story goes, in 1763, a young minister, traveling on a cliffside road in Somerset, England, ducked into a cave to escape the flashes of lightning and pounding rain. As he looked out at Cheddar Gorge, he pondered the gift of finding shelter and peace in God. Waiting there, he began to write a hymn, “Rock of Ages,” with its memorable opening lines: “Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.”

We don’t know if Augustus Toplady thought about Moses’s experience in the cleft of a rock while writing the hymn (Exodus 33:22), but perhaps he did. The Exodus account tells of Moses seeking God’s reassurance and God’s response. When Moses asked God to reveal His glory to him, God answered graciously, knowing that “no one may see me and live” (v. 20). He tucked Moses into the rocks when He passed by, letting Moses only see His back. And Moses knew that God was with him.

We can trust that just as God said to Moses, “My Presence will go with you” (v. 14), so too we can find refuge in Him. We may experience many storms in our lives, as did Moses and the English minister in the story, but when we cry out to Him, He will give us the peace of His presence.

As you look back at various seasons of your life, how do you see God’s loving presence during the storms? How do you experience His presence today?

Father God, help me to trust that You’re with me, even during the storms of life.

Sounds lovely...though dry. Some more rain would have made it perfect. The west needs to learn to share! Is there a natural barrier that keeps it from your part?

It got up to about 73 here. Very nice. We had the doors open instead of the artificial air from the AC going. Supposed to heat back up by Wednesday. Hope it doesn’t.

Just walked in from work...LOTS of homework! Yes, more space, but it will take me a while to make it work. The monitors are set up right in the middle, leaving little room for things on either side. I have reached to use my calculator multiple times, but it is not there. It’s off to the left and I need to roll a bit after turning. It will work out eventually as I get stuff put away in their new homes.

It certainly was lovely, though drizzly. It’s been quite a while since we had such cool temps during the day. They say 70 tomorrow, two days of low 80s, then backing off again when another cold front comes through Friday. Only 65 for the high Saturday with that slight chance for rain so we should be busy at the museum.

I-65 seems to be a barrier that holds things up. All the heat rising from traffic creates a wall of sorts. That’s all I can think of. It happens all the time and it’s very frustrating.

Nice to be able to open the windows, isn’t it?

No surprise you have a ton of homework since your time at work was eaten up with the move. Not cool for them to hit you with that on a Monday!
Maybe it won’t take too long to get all your stuff situated where YOU want and need it. Good luck!

Well, I don’t open the windows because our screens are not strong and one cat inside and one cat outside could shred them. LOL! But open doors are very nice.

And my feet are actually really cool right now. THAT hasn’t happened in a long time.

Hope I-65 opens its gates so y’all get more rain. Meanwhile, I’d better go. My eyelids are getting heavy. See ya for another fun quiz tomorrow night. :)

You must have those flimsy nylon screens. They certainly won’t survive cat claws.
We only have one window with a screen on it and it’s metal.
The other house has those flimsy screens so I guess we won’t be able to open those more than a crack.

My feet are a little cool, too, and it feels kinda good. LOL! Not cool enough to feel the need to slip socks on though.

Yep, that’s the screens we have. I hate them but it is what it is. We never had a need for metal ones before...when we had dogs. LOL!

You might have to pick one window for the kitties and replace the screen. I should to...for the bedroom. I love an open window when it’s cool.

Not going to bother replacing screens. We’ll just crack the windows enough for air to flow through but not allow the cats to tear the screens.
We just can’t crack windows in this house because there aren’t screens. No screens = bugs in the house. ergh!
