Desperate to fill teacher shortages, US schools are hiring teachers from overseas

When Joevie Alvarado became a teacher, she never expected to teach American students 7,600 miles away.

But a dire shortage of US teachers means some schools are taking drastic measures -- like hiring teachers from half a world away.

"For the first year, it's a little bit of a struggle because I'm the kind of person who misses family that easily," said Alvarado, who taught for a decade in the Philippines before moving to Arizona.

But "in terms of pay, let's just say my previous pay was multiplied by eight or 10 when I got here," she said. "So having that kind of pay, it enticed me to be here."

Some parents may be surprised to learn their children are now being taught by international teachers.

Tom Trigalet, who was principal at Casa Grand Union High School when Alvarado was hired, said there's not much choice.

"When you really don't have any other applicants, how are you going to fill those spots?" Trigalet said. But hiring teachers from overseas is only a temporary fix to a widespread problem.

A nationwide crisis

Across the US, schools are hemorrhaging teachers while fewer college graduates enter the profession.

In 2018, the US had an estimated shortage of 112,000 teachers, according to the Learning Policy Institute.

Arizona alone had 7,000 teacher vacancies going into this year, said Joe Thomas, president of the Arizona Education Association.

Some of those vacancies are filled by people who don't have a standard teaching certificate, he said. Others are being plugged by long-term substitutes, contracted agencies or teachers who must add an additional course to their day.

So schools like Casa Grande Union High have hired several Filipino teachers using J-1 visas. Those visas allow teachers to stay in the US for up to five years.

ahh, the old H1B visa rears it’s head again.

There is no trade, profession or occupation that cannot be obliterated by the H-1B visa.

Teaching jobs are quite coveted in my suburban neck of the woods here in NE FL. I know one guy who commutes from my neighborhood to the inner city to teach.

Governor DeSantis was on the radio today proposing a new starting teacher salary of $47k state wide. Not bad.

“...teachers in their fourth year at Casa Grande teaching science — a notoriously hard subject to fill with US teachers...”

The way our filthy public school systems are run and the “qualifications..lack of” demanded of teachers, the likes of Nils Bohr, Albert Einste8n, Werner von Braun etc wouldn’t meet the “standards”.

Great. Now they can teach ESL in yet another language.

Being from the PI speaking Spanish and Spanglish is an advantage now.

HOME SCHOOL!

Filipinos ( the educated ones ) speak English quite well.
Heck, I would even venture to say that the educated ones speak English BETTER than many Americans.

They’re hiring Filipinos in Casa Grande because she most likely speaks Spanish in addition to Tagalog.

The children in school in Casa Grande are mostly Mexican, maybe a few Pima indians. White kids are only 27% of the students in the CGUSD, even though CG itself is majority white.

This is what happens when the SCOTUS overthrows the laws of a nation of people and tells the people of the country next door that they are entitled to the money and resources of Americans. They simply stampede in and demand everything be handed to them. Like having teachers who speak their language and have the same European colonial history that they do.

Why would anyone want to be a teacher for a bunch of little entitled snot nosed kids that you can’t even discipline without losing your job? I mean the kids now a days slap their parents, threaten then with calls to CPS etc. And the ones who aint entitled are feral as their own parents won’t even feed and clothe or even buy them Christmas presents without getting them free from some charity!

RE: They’re hiring Filipinos in Casa Grande because she most likely speaks Spanish in addition to Tagalog.

OK, things are beginning to be clear to me — the shortage ONLY EXISTS IN PLACES WHERE A HUGE PORTION OF STUDENTS SPEAK SPANISH AS THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE.

So, you won’t see this kind of shortage in places like Tennessee, the Carolinas, Maine or Vermont?

Flipside of that is that if you’re an American who is strong in math and science you’re going to have a lot of higher-paying career options than going into teaching.

Does this mean there is a shortage of white, single, elementary school teachers to celebrate Kwanzaa?

A nationwide crisis

And just remember folks, never let a crisis go to waste. Time to tank up on more foreigners! Yay!

Assign them to inner city "schools". They will self-deport after one semester.

No one wants to put up with brats and their parents. Teachers are retiring because administrators do not have their backs.

Dont know that I can say that about shortages in those places, but uh...Los Illegantes are in TN and NC/SC in division strength as well.

Maybe Maine and Vermont not so much. But Somalian might be the language of choice for the replacement teaches there....

Decades ago my wife suckered for the high pay of teachers, and updated her credentials to be able to qualify. Fat chance - if the pay is that good, you have to know that there’s a catch. Namely, that you have to have pull to get the job.
