A correspondent I have known since his childhood spends a large part of his time overseas as a missionary.
Coming back to Wisconsin, he was surprised to find a “No Firearms Allowed” sign at a Denny's. I believe this is a local policy, decided by each local manager of the franchise. My correspondent gave me permission to edit the account of his reaction. His overseas experience has made him appreciate the freedoms Americans take for granted. His account:
Returning to America after having been gone half a year, lends itself to re-entry culture shock. I recently returned to the USA. I am extremely politically active as well as up to speed on currant issues. I was still shocked by the the anti freedom advances the leftists have made in rural America.
Driving north into Wisconsin on the Interstate, I decided to pull into a Denny's for one of their breakfast specials. I was shocked to see a “No Firearms” sign!
I was traveling with my father, who said: ” Well, I guess we better find another place to eat, one that loves freedom”.
I replied “Yes, but I won't just walk away in silent defeat”.
We went in; a friendly waitress asked if only the two of us would be dinning. ” No”, I replied, “neither of us would be staying.”

We do the same thing. Even though we do not plan to patronize the establishment, we make the effort to go take up their time explaining why just loud enough for customers to hear and then turn around and leave.
But not really much of one.
Thing is, a lot of companies are putting up ‘no guns’ signs or otherwise barring legal carry because their insurers are telling them they have to. If they don’t, they won’t cover them/charge them outrageous additional fees/require them to take prohibitively expensive measures to ‘protect’ their customers from guns.
This isn’t going to change until it becomes more expensive to prohibit legal carry than it does to allow it. Here’s one solution: Pass laws that require any business with more than 10 employees (or whatever the Obamacare threshold is) must provide “adequate” armed security to protect their patrons and employees. This is defined as either one armed security guard per individual or associated group up to ten persons or allowing the legal carry of weapons as defined by local law. Failure to do so should mean that in the event of a shooting or other security incident the business will assume full liability for whatever incident occurs. Including being required to pay medical bills, funeral expenses, all forms of compensation, punitive damages as assessed by a court, etc., etc.
Watch how fast insurance companies will change their tune when they discover they will be on the hook for millions of dollars per business for preventing the legal carriage of arms. You’ll see those “no guns” signs become a nigh-extinct species overnight as insurance companies pressure their customers to allow legal carry.

Don’t these Denny’s jerks not realize that a person feels MORE secure in a public place that has open visible carry going on.
Also you feel LESS secure with a stupid sign that says Gun Free Zone posted to the public.
Yours is a well thought solution to a growing nuisance. The only rub is the actual passing of your proposed laws. Even in States with Republican legislatures, spineless representatives will cower at the thought of media condemnation for such a practical law or statute.
I hate to shock the Dennys crowd, but on a daily basis in a ‘no-weapon’ Dennys operation....there’s probably sixty folks who come in with the weapon in their purse, backpack, or shoulder-holster. Other than the sign existing and giving hope to the anti-gun crowd....it’s a joke.
That’s something Republicans need to deal with in their primaries, then.
On the other hand, such a bill could be pointed out as “we need to protect our shopping public properly, and what we have now isn’t working” as well as “this will provide many jobs.” And hey, this just sets minimum standards of safety, etc., etc.
In Tennessee the sign must comply with the law and be a certain size with specific language. I open carried by mistake into a store once. The sign was very small, not worded properly and placed where you had to really look for it. The clerk told me I had to leave...I took him to the sign and showed him my business card (I teach the Tennessee carry class). Then explained the law to him. I did not leave. Next day the sign was right.
You are so right. The signs are for a policy that is unenforceable. Unless they are willing to search everyone who comes in how can they really know?
The criminal who’s going to hold up the place is going to see the sign and walk out? the guy who’s getting revenge for being fired?
The signs are typical stupid “feel good” acts, and they will not make anyone safer.

The McDonald’s in my home town and neighboring town were sold last year. There are now No Gun signs up. The former owner had a permit himself and welcomed CCW. I used to shoot with him at the local range. Haven’t darkened their door since.
Not that kind. Having worked in food service, and in franchised food service, they barked up the wrong tree. Waitresses don’t set policy. They don’t even know the guy that does. I used to have customers all the time telling what we “should” do, and I’d tell them not to tell me, call the big office in Chicago, everything we do at the franchise store level is set there. Hassling the minimum wage worker does nothing, except let them know you’re a jerk.
Anyway Denny’s sucks.
It’s a sign.
Ignore it.
The worst they can do is throw you out of the place.

There’s no such thing as a gun free zone if I’m around.
I live in a restrictive state and thus do not have a carry permit but I was in a Shoney’s in South Carolina recently. Saw one guy sidle up to the salad bar open carrying. The next guy was printing under his shirt.
I looked at my wife and told here that everyone is packing in this place. Felt very safe.
We hope so. Sadly, as marktwain/Dean points out, the Swiss used to be a close second and I still see that proclaimed even here of FR. Not the freedom loving place it used to be. Even when it was more “gun friendly”, it was dependent on each canton’s desires/laws/regulations. The EU has basically destroyed europe. Well, not even basically. Europe used to be fun but I wouldn’t take an all expense paid trip there now. Thanks for the story. Haven’t been to a Denny’s in a long time. May never go again now.
I didn’t realize Denny’s was still in business. I thought they’d gone the way of Sambo’s. Hopefully, other freedom-loving Americans understand they need to put financial pressure on these anti-Americans.
