Bernie Sanders, 78, is STILL in the hospital and canceling events after having two stents...

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders hasn't left the hospital since Tuesday night, and is still recovering from an operation to place two stents in a blocked artery.

But the 78-year-old socialist firebrand, the oldest person in the 2020 field, plans to be on stage for a Democratic presidential primary debate on October 15 in Ohio.

'Bernie is up and about, his wife Jane said in a statement. 'Yesterday, he spent much of the day talking with staff about policies, cracking jokes with the nurses and doctors, and speaking with his family on the phone.'

'His doctors are pleased with his progress, and there has been no need for any additional procedures,' she said. 'We expect Bernie will be discharged and on a plane back to Burlington before the end of the weekend. He'll take a few days to rest, but he's ready to get back out there and is looking forward to the October debate.'

Sanders canceled a string of presidential campaign events on Wednesday after suffering what a spokesman said was 'chest discomfort' that required the stents.

what kind of person would actually continue running in such a situation?

Remember Paul Tsongas declaring himself cancer-free when he ran in 1992? He died from a recurrence in what would have been his 7th year if he had won.

Imagine what the stress of the Presidency might have done to his cancer?

Imagine what the stress of the Presidency would do to Sanders with two stents in his heart?

I wonder if Hillary Clinton will sell him her black, mystery-machine medi-van from 2016.

Funny, thanks! :)

So two days for an old guy. No biggie. Better than his beloved socialist system where he’d have to wait a month (oh right, he’s Party elite...).

My late husband had a stent and was released from the hospital and sent home around 18 hours later; he returned for a 2nd stent and spent a few days in the hospital, then sent to rehab for 3 weeks. Admittedly, the stents/heart issue wasn’t his only medical problem, but he was gone in 2 months.

BUT I’d say if all Bernie needed was 2 heart stents, he’d be home by now, tho they may have kept him because going home involves flying and they’d restrict that.

Normal or not normal?

Insufficient information.

Two weeks is far far beyond normal for a couple of stents

Except it's two days.

Exactly....so far its within the realm of normal. Given his age and his vaunted status extra caution is warranted up to a point. Not sure where that point would be but 2 days is fine.

I am 80 and had one stent put in, in early Jan this year.

It took about 12 minutes after I was ready on the table.

40 minutes later, I was sharing a turkey sandwich with my wife.

4 hours later she drove me home, and I cat napped on the way home.

Another hour later, I had a full dinner and watched some tv and went to bed.

I was up the next day at normal time 5:45 and followed a normal day/evening and night. I started rehab exercises a couple of weeks after the the procedure.

An 84 year old friend had 4 stents put in this summer and was eating lunch after about an hour after the procedure. He spent the night, and his wife stayed in his room in a sleeper chair. She drove them home the next day at about 10 am. He is doing very well.

Medical stories from Freepers are interesting but sometimes they scare the bejesus out of me. My thread on the Eyes brought up some truly horrifying stories.

Sanders is toast. He is remaining hospitalized because the cardiology group of doctors want to do more testing of his heart, arteries and blood flow rate. He obviously has more problems and the stent inserts have not cured the problem. Doctors demand more tests!!!

Bernie is trying to convince the hospital that health care is free and he is not leaving until they agree.

A dumb, nasty commie so fat from the taxes of free markets his arteries are blocked is able to be nursed back to health by the best care in the world via the private sector- which he wants to destroy. Meh. Hope he gets better all around.
