Las Vegas shooting motive remains elusive [tr]

Two years have now passed since the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history – yet the biggest question about it remains unanswered.

The American public is still in the dark as to why Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on concertgoers outside the Mandalay Bay resort on Oct. 1, 2017, killing 58 and wounding hundreds more.

The FBI’s agents and behavior specialists spent more than a year investigating the attack. Officials released clips of nearly 1,200 officer body camera videos, many hours of 911 audio recordings and dozens of handwritten and transcribed witness accounts.

But 730 days later, no one can definitively say what Paddock’s motive for the massacre was.

Paddock acted alone when he planned and carried out the attack, Aaron Rouse, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas office, said in January. The 64-year-old fatally shot himself as police arrived into his hotel suite.

Las Vegas police closed their investigation in August 2018 without establishing a motive.

Paddock was a retired postal service worker, accountant and real estate investor who owned rental properties and homes in Reno and in a retirement community more than hour’s drive from Las Vegas. He also held a pilot’s license and liked to gamble tens of thousands of dollars at a time.

Police characterized him as a loner who had no religious or political affiliations, despite reports he had ranted about the Federal Emergency Management Agency “camps” set up after Hurricane Katrina and deadly standoffs between law enforcement officers and militia groups at Waco, Texas, in 1993 and Ruby Ridge, Idaho, in 1992.

Just as well. Even if the FBI gave us a motive, I wouldn’t believe them.

I remember watching some former ballistics expert measuring the time from the “report” of the fire to the time the round hit the ground. He took many parameters into consideration.

He surmised that there were multiple gunman.

There is something big that is being covered up. This is such a travesty about truth in this country. I don’t know which it was, but the guns, money, Saudis, there was SOMETHING going on. And why did he wait til the last song of the 2 day festival?

...When he [Atta] returned his rental car on July 1st, [2001] it had 110 miles on it. Aside from the internet cafe, police don't know much about Atta's movements while in Las Vegas, and it raises the possibility whether there might be someone here who helped them. "Without a doubt. But chances are, I'm guessing, whoever was here also came from somewhere else and they met up. We just never figured out who they were," said former Clark County Sheriff Bill Young. At the time, Young was in charge of special ops teams for Metro. His detectives and FBI agents poured through mountains of hotel records, rental car receipts, and surveillance videos to document the terrorists movements. Tipsters say at least one terrorist received lap dances at the Olympic Garden strip club. Others sipped coffee across from UNLV and partied and gambled at casinos.

He just may have been a hit man and a money launderer. Could have been one of HRC leading men. Could sit at the slots for days making transfers between jobs.

Reclusive home life consisted of an unfurnished house, ez chair and a store bought wife.

Paddock took himself out with a bang. Now Vegas is keeping it quiet.

Might be something to it because the 9/11 hijackers scouted Vegas in 2001 for some reason- possibly because they planned to hit an upcoming visit of members of the Saudi Royal Family there too, in 2001. AQ was backed by an expat group in London’s Finsbury Park most called al Mujahiroun, whose goal was to overthrow the ruling Sauds.

AQ is known for coming back to finish foiled plots...even years later.

Remember back when "Going Postal" was a common toss out phrase? Then came the push-back. It was so unfair to use the term.

Paddock was a retired postal service worker...

Sounds to me like he went postal.

He just went off the deep end with no real agenda. I can't even remember his name. That's how I want it.

I think he wanted to go out a famous mass murderer.

Not in my home. The perp is a nameless faceless person to me.

What bothers me about it is starting a mass shooting as cover and escape. If things have gone south and you’ve just killed your suspect arms dealer for the assassination why draw attention by doing a mass shooting? They could have put a do not disturb sign om the door and walked out of the hotel. The only thing could be middle east/islamic insanity which is beyond most of us to fathom. Maybe they thought ok....no crown prince...lets kill a bunch of infidels as plan b.

I heard the motive of the shooter was left in a handwritten note and left on the front door of David Koresh’s home, maybe the FBI can look for it.

Maybe if they hadn’t confiscated and erased all those cell phones they might have gotten a clearer picture and a hint as to motive.

He was dead before the second shot was fired. Of course, he was alive before the first.
